Job Title: Associate Dean of Students


The Associate Dean of Students serves as the lead for student affairs at the campus-level. Reporting to the University Dean of Students & Chief Diversity Officer, the Associate Dean of Students directly oversees LIU Promise, Student Life, Residence Life, Career Success, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and Academic Advising. The Associate Dean of Students serves as a key campus leader, overseeing a dynamic student affairs team across multiple units. In addition, the Associate Dean represents the Division of Student Affairs by collaborating with colleagues in Academic Affairs, Admissions, Athletics, and other key areas.

The Associate Dean of Students will be able to consistently demonstrate the below core competencies as well as those set for all student affairs educators by NASPA and ACPA.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Supervise directors, leaders, and manage the daily operations for the Division of Student Affairs at the campus level.
  • Oversee the areas of LIU Promise, Student Life, Residence Life, Career Success, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and Academic Advising.
  • Serve as a member of the University-wide Division of Student Affairs Leadership Team.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of professional staff members including establishing goals and fostering professional development opportunities, monitor goals for team and meet recruitment and retention goals.
  • Hold regular team meetings and staff one-on-one meetings.
  • Facilitate, participate and oversee training/development programs for professional staff.
  • Manage Student Affairs and Student Life budgets.
  • Collaborate with various offices to support recruitment and retention efforts and events.
  • Serve in an on-call capacity, providing oversight and support to the first and second level on-call administrators.
  • Act as a student conduct officer, handling high-level student conduct cases or appeals.
  • Attend meetings, participate in campus-wide committees, and assist with annual projects and events.
  • Coordinate with counterpart(s) on other campuses to ensure a streamlined and uniform LIU student experience.
  • Complete weekly and monthly reports that demonstrate progress towards retention, student registration, and other key job performance indicators.

  • Other duties as assigned by University Dean of Students and Chief Diversity Officer.

Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience:

  • At least 5-7 years of progressively professional experience in higher education, student affairs; sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Masters Degree Required.
  • Proven track record of success managing co-curricular activities and/or academic support services.
  • Appreciation for cultural differences and global values.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Facility with database management systems.
  • High energy and enthusiasm to work with students and propel them toward success.

Working Conditions:

  • Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, are required to execute the position’s role responsibly.
  • Occasional travel to/from other LIU campuses for the facilitation of trainings, meetings and other university functions.
