As a member of the Body Structure Engineering team, the Supervisor will be responsible to supervise Design Release Engineers to meet program deliverables for Structure Group to include: body-in-white, platform body and upper body. Expect to use your experience and engineering tools to ensure both initial assembly and component specifications, support system performance targets and government regulatory requirements.
Role and Responsibilities
- Working level, technical leader for the Body-In-White structure
- Lead at a detail level the daily activities of a team of DREs to design, develop and release the BIW from design concept through production
- Interface with studio, test, plant, quality, vehicle planning and suppliers to design, develop and release sheet metal parts.
- Develop criteria sections for future vehicles; provide feasibility/proposals for development of designs from studio concepts/sketches
- Conduct vehicle benchmark / technical research of competitive products, present findings and suggest recommendations
- Follow-up with DREs to release completed geometry on time using Catia V5 Teamcenter CAD tools
- Coordinate with homologation team to ensure validation of all applicable requirements
- Understand and update engineering documentation such as technical specifications, DFMEAs and DVPs
- Coach team to understand vehicle and component level CAE analysis and propose next steps
- Oversee department EBOM, including material selection and finish
- Work with purchasing for supplier sourcing and supplier management – including design, validation and tooling
- Travel to suppliers and assembly plant for prototype builds and SOP support.
- Track open issues, identify roadblocks, initiate communication and formulate plans for timely closure of issues.
- Escalate major issues or roadblocks to Sr. Manager
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Materials Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited or equivalent program.
- 7 years of engineering experience with OEM design and release of sheet metal for body structures
- Demonstrated knowledge of first principals, strength of materials, fatigue, noise & vibration, corrosion, thermal expansion
- Experience with metal forming and joining, AHSS, hot stamp, welding, rivets, structural adhesives, sealers and e-coat
- Dimensional management and understanding of GD&T
- Class A surface development, typical section development and knowledge of FMVSS/regulatory requirements
- Experience of root cause analysis or Design of Experiments
- High level of oral and written communication skills
- Must be proficient with Microsoft products such as Word, Excel and others
- Proficient in CAD (Catia V5) and Teamcenter, ability to make 3D parts, welded assemblies and 2D drawings.
Preferred Skills
- Previous OEM, Start-up or large plant body shop experience.
- Experience benchmarking engineering technologies and applying those into the design activities as appropriate
- Able to define design guidelines and propose manufacturing strategy for future product
- Previous role supervising DREs
- Good analytical skills for calculating simple structures, or perform using CAE
- Proficient with Jira system
- Experience with injection moldings, roll-forming, castings, extrusions, fastener testing, tailor-welded blanks, paint, SMC
