What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Development and Fabrication Tec 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

We are seeking Electronics Technicians to assist in the development and fabrication of custom electronics for space-based instruments. Previous experience with space-flight electronics is not required. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, results-oriented, and a proficient multi-tasker with a strong enthusiasm for learning!

The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has been designing, building, and operating highly innovative space-based measurement and detection systems for over 60 years. Our work includes space-based measurement systems for verification of international nuclear treaties, nuclear nonproliferation and space situational awareness activities, and scientific investigation. In addition, we lead experiments on NASA missions such as the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars Rovers, Van Allen Probes, and the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). The Space Instrument Realization Group (ISR-5) provides engineering and technical expertise to develop and deploy high-quality, innovative measurement systems. ISR-5 is composed of electrical and mechanical technicians, technologists, and engineers, systems engineers, project control specialists and other specialists who work on collaborative, diversified teams to deliver national security payloads and one-of-a-kind NASA instruments. Successfully delivering these payloads requires critical participation and teamwork with staff at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) as well as with Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) and other organizations. Persons in this role will be responsible for developing and applying expert knowledge of high-reliability electrical components, circuits, assemblies and systems.

Candidates should be capable of performing these tasks:

Development and Fabrication Tec 4 $67,800 - $107,700
  • Test and troubleshoot electronic circuits, including complex measurements on sub-assemblies or fully integrated systems.
  • Build and modify basic test circuits and cables.
  • Perform review of drawings to ensure drafting/design accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform data collection and graphical analysis (plotting) to analyze data from laboratory equipment or custom instruments.
  • Perform field troubleshooting on systems and test equipment using detailed drawings, manuals, and written instructions.
  • Adhere to safety and security policies, programs, procedures and practices. Make safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
  • Promote a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Development and Fabrication Tec 5 $81,700 - $133,100

In addition to what was outlined at Development and Fabrication Tec 4 level, the Tec 5 level candidate will:
  • Design complex circuits utilizing schematic capture and simulation tools (e.g., analog SPICE, digital timing, VHDL, Mentor Graphics, or signal integrity tools).
  • Use LabView, C#, Python or other software for automated testing and scripting.
  • Specify, review, and approve electrical designs, schematics, and bill-of-materials prior to release for prototype and engineering model fabrication.
  • Develop detailed instructions, schematics or assembly procedures to specify components for advanced, high-reliability assemblies.
  • Develop and execute test and integration procedures for high reliability instruments.
  • Direct and assist lower-level technicians with basic and moderately complex measurements and reviewing data sets for adequacy and accuracy.
  • Assume a leadership role within teams and projects to ensure completion of certain tasks.
  • Prepare reports and presentations.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Communication & Teaming

Demonstrated experience interfacing directly with engineers and other staff to develop and implement instrumentation projects. Enthusiasm for working in a team environment with engineers and scientists. Demonstrated written and verbal communication, active listening, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Technical Experience
  • Electrical Test & Fabrication Experience including:
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting analog or digital electronics (use of voltmeters, oscilloscopes, etc.).
  • Experience in the set up and operation of standard or specialized test equipment to test and characterize the performance of electronic components, assemblies, or systems.
  • Experience in the assembly of circuitry for electronic systems following engineering instructions, production specifications, and/or technical manuals.
  • Ability to perform basic soldering and wiring jobs.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow documented electrical test and system integration procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) software tools used for schematic capture and/or circuit board layout.

Timeliness

Ability to deliver products on schedule, while being involved in multiple projects having various and sometimes changing priorities. Demonstrated ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently.

Additional Job Requirements for Development and Fabrication Tec 5:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Technical Experience

Additional Electrical Test & Fabrication Experience Including:
  • Experience troubleshooting electronic systems down to the component level.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) software tools and experience in independent circuit design of test fixtures and test support infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of relevant techniques and advanced components including how to specify and procure high-reliability components (e.g., op-amps, microprocessors, field programmable gate arrays).

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires an Associates' Degree and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires an Associates' Degree and a minimum of 7 years relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or engineering technology may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience working with high-reliability electronics.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and handling classified information.
  • Experience with configuration management tools/processes.
  • Experience with formal verification & validation methods.
  • Knowledge of aerospace industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA Complex codes and standards.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
