Organization Summary
The LA Conservation Corps (the Corps) is a private, non-profit organization that has been helping at-risk young people develop themselves since 1986. To date, more than 20,000 young people have participated in Corps classes and service projects, learning new skills while contributing to the quality of life for all of us in the greater Los Angeles area.
Mission
The primary mission of the LA Conservation Corps is to provide at-risk young adults and school-aged youth with opportunities for success through job skills training, education and work experience with an emphasis on conservation and service projects that benefit the community.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Maintenance Worker is responsible for ensuring the maintenance and physical upkeep of all areas inside and outside assigned work area.
Essential Functions
- Completes daily maintenance tasks including collection of debris from trash receptacles, bulky item pick-up, and proper material disposal. May include pressure washing.
- Completes daily tree maintenance tasks including water well re-construction, removal of litter, debris, and weed abatement.
- Canvasses, collects, and enters required data for special contracts using various technology platforms (e.g. Microsoft Forms, ArcGIS, Survey123).
- Basic tree health assessment, tree stake and tie replacement or adjustment
- Completes daily tree visit logs, detailing all information pertinent to the health of each tree
- Maintains nursery via weeding watering, and general upkeep
- Maintains tool inventory and basic tool sharpening
- Loads and unloads tree stock including but not limited to 5g, 15g, and 24” box trees
- Basic species identification
- Maintains and provides an inventory of all tree species in the nursery at any given time
- During tree distribution events, must be able to determine residency of person(s) requesting a tree using software applications
- Supports technical construction projects as needed (deliveries, transport, etc.)
- Works independently and takes lead in completing daily tasks in multiple work zones.
- Ensures quality customer service and professionalism
- Motivates young people to fulfill their education, development and work plans and goals.
- Provides Corpsmembers the skills necessary to improve their employability.
- Ensures safe work practices, a safe work environment and the proper maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Ensures a consistently high quality of work, excellent customer service, and professionalism is demonstrated and performed by corps members.
- At project worksites, serves as liaison between project sponsoring agency staff and your supervisor.
- Trains and guides the team in project development tasks.
- Implements work projects in a manner that is timely, efficient and effective from start to finish.
- Ensures that the appropriate equipment is available for the work crews to perform the work projects.
- Provides team support for community events and promote community involvement in team projects.
- Prepares daily and monthly reports of project work assignments.
- Punctuality and satisfactory attendance are essential functions of the job.
- Working from home is not an option.
- Other duties assigned, as needed.
Qualifications
Required Education And Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalency (from an accredited institution).
- A minimum of six (6) months relevant experience.
Preferred Education And Experience
- Associate’s and/or Bachelor’s degree.
- Previous experience working in the non-profit or public sector.
- Previous experience working with power tools and heavy equipment
Other Requirements
- Must be COVID-19 vaccinated and be able to provide supporting documentation.
- Attend events and meetings in the community to support the program. This can involve working Saturdays or Sundays, as needed.
- Pass a post-offer drug/alcohol screen test before commencing employment (required to submit for the drug/alcohol screening at a company designated facility).
- Pass a post-offer Live Scan (fingerprint/background clearance-Department of Justice) before commencing employment.
- California Class C Driver’s License, validation of driving record for commercial policy insurability per the requirements of the state of California.
- Standard multi-media first aid certification. If you do not currently possess a standard multi-media first aid certification, you will have 90 days from the effective date of acquiring this position to secure a multi-media certification.
- Reference checks will be conducted. Employment is also contingent upon receipt of acceptable references.
- Forklift Certification.
- Work schedule may vary including working weekends and graveyard shifts.
Salary and Benefits
- Hourly rate: $19.83 - $24.18 Hourly (reflects the entire hourly rate range). A starting hourly rate higher than $19.83 per hour is based on a level of experience and education that significantly exceeds the minimum requirements and is commensurate with the compensation scale (hourly rate range).
- Medical, Dental, Vision Benefits with 100% employer coverage of costs for employee and 80% coverage for additional family members (beginning January 1, 2022).
- 3 weeks of vacation at hire; 11 paid Holidays and 2 weeks of sick time accrued per year (effective January 1, 2022).
- 401k retirement plan with match of up to 4% (effective January 1, 2022).
