Description

The purpose of this position is to provide a continuum of victim support from crisis through investigation and judicial processes within a law enforcement environment. Provide crisis intervention, medical and legal advocacy, and emotional support.

Examples of Duties

  • Serves as a first point of contact to victims of crime who experience trauma and provide education on the complexities of the criminal justice process.
  • Provides a continuum of victim support from crisis through investigation and judicial processes within a law enforcement environment.
  • Works a higher percentage of complex cases.
  • Represents the Victim Services Unit and the Louisville Metro Police Department as a liaison to internal and external partners.
  • Provides emotional, physical, financial, and practical support to victims of crime.
  • Provides access to the criminal justice system and support agencies.
  • Maintains case files with documented case notes and services.
  • Provides training to police officers, academy personnel, or any other relevant groups.
  • Provides public information to various agencies, departments and civilian groups as requested to enhance the public's awareness of the services afforded by the Victim Services Unit.
  • Acts as a liaison between victims, police officers/detectives, county attorneys, county victim advocates, commonwealth attorneys, commonwealth victim advocates, and community-based agencies.
  • Reviews new cases, identify victim needs, develop a plan to address identified needs, and maintain accurate, confidential records and case management reports.
  • Maintains contact and communication with victims and witnesses during the investigation, prosecution, and judicial proceedings.
  • Provides notifications of investigative activity or case development as needed, as well as information regarding the status of criminal and civil court cases.
  • Provides court accompaniment to crime victims and witnesses for some civil and criminal proceedings.
  • Responds to call-outs to crime scenes (including evenings, weekends, and holidays) or other locations to provide crisis intervention, support, and advocacy services.
  • Coordinates procedures for police notification of witnesses and victims participating in the judicial process; ensure effective exchange of information, as necessary.
  • Assists the Victim Services Supervisors in training new employees assigned to the Victim Services Unit.
  • Assists the supervision team by providing timely information and statistical data in support of the maintenance, growth, and expansion of the Victim Services Unit.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Social or Human Services, Psychology or related discipline.
  • Three (3) years of social services, counseling, or victim advocacy experience.
Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Other Minimum Requirements
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test.
  • Must provide one's own source of transportation.
  • Must work a varied schedule.
  • Applicants who have bought, sold, or used marijuana within one year of application, or have bought, sold, or used any controlled substance or narcotic drug without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Physical Demands
Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
  • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
  • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
  • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
  • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

  • Electrical shock; Heights.
  • Radiation; Disease/pathogens.
  • Toxic/caustic chemicals; Explosives; Violence.
  • Exposure to bodily fluids.
  • Other extreme hazards not listed above.
