SUMMARY The DEXA Technician will be a vital member of our healthcare team, providing essential support in both administrative and clinical capacities. Responsibilities will include completing DEXA body composition scans to promote healthy lifestyles in patients, preparing patients for imaging, discharge communication, excellent customer service and teamwork. The ideal candidate will have a strong background as a DEXA technologist and in supporting roles with a commitment to delivering high-quality imaging care within the integrative and functional medicine framework.  

Essential Functions

Clinical Support  

  • Collects patients appropriately from waiting room for testing.
  • Cleans rooms and maintains room hygiene of patient spaces per facility protocols.  
  • Verifies orders for appropriate study and follow up with providers and inquires with correct provider when in doubt of imaging needed.
  • Performs high quality body composition images in a timely manner while maintaining excellent customer service and patient care.
  • Maintains the safety of patients and other staff by maintaining and following safety precautions with radiographic devices.
  • Ensures facility safety by reporting any potential hazard concerns and alerting management in a timely manner.  
  • Provides assistance to patients as needed (on/off exam table) and acts to ensure patient safety and comfort during imaging.
  • Coordinates with office staff for timely care of patients throughout the facility.

Patient Interaction

  • Greet and interact with patients and visitors with professionalism and customer orientated communication during care interactions.
  • Able to properly screen patients related to DEXA imaging for proper positioning and patient safety during procedure. Able to determine patients who need verification prior to imaging.
  • Monitors patient's well-being during scan and takes appropriate action when patient discomfort or medical problems are recognized.
  • Able to adjust imaging techniques based on special patient needs or situations to obtain the best images.
  • Follows dress code, safety measures, protocols, and instructions to maintain safety of self, other staff, and patients.
  • Maintains compliance with all applicable HIPPA and privacy requirements based on laws, regulations, and facility policies.
  • Able to provide appropriate follow- up communication to patients after completion of imaging exam and ensure the communication of results to providers within EHR.
  • Demonstrates competency in using charting software for job duties, after training.

Administrative Tasks  

  • Schedule patient appointments and coordinate with other healthcare team members as needed based on assigned tasks.  
  • Enter data and maintain electronic health records, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.  
  • Participate in various projects and/or meetings, and complete other tasks as assigned by management.   
  • Cross-train and assist in other departments as needed during unscheduled times.
  • Answers patient’s questions via messaging feature within the health record with accuracy, professionalism, and timely fashion.  
  • Demonstrates compliance with clinical policies and procedures and security measures, with reporting of any violations or concerns for security breaches as evident. 
  • Maximizes time well in prioritization of tasks to ensure well-functioning facility.  

Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

This DEXA Technician must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to demonstrate they can perform the essential functions of the job, along with the physical requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Experience in a wellness facility (preferred).  
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills.  
  • Exceptional communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.  
  • Proficient in electronic health record systems including Athena.  
  • Bilingual (Spanish) Preferred  

Experience/Education Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent  
  • California State Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) Permit or CA State Diagnostic Radiologic Technology License and DEXA eligible
  • Strong understanding of use of DEXA imaging in osteoporosis and body composition.
  • Current BLS with AED certificate from the American Heart Association or similar organization.
