This Senior Operations Engineer position requires a high degree of technical and managerial competencies providing support to many and various Lumen and customer organizations. This position assumes ownership and accountability in areas of recognized technical expertise and provides technical, leadership, guidance, and assistance across different segments. Principal work includes high-level trouble identification and resolution for unique, complex or chronic type network problems, i.e. hardware, software, design, or provisioning. This position proactively takes the technical lead on technical issues or concerns, effectively identifying and resolving problems related to service assurance, network reliability, and customer satisfaction. This position will also mentor lower-level engineers and technicians as required.
- This position, under minimal supervision and with subject matter expert level skills within more than one discipline in the area of Access Transport, Voice, SS7, Power, and Network Backbone Augmentation provides Tier II technical support both internally and externally to Lumen employees, contractors, vendors, and customers, as required.
- The senior engineer will act as the subject matter expert for the Local Voice, SS7, Power, Transport, and NBA teams. Offering them real-time technical knowledge transfer as well as training and escalation support.
- Candidates for this position must demonstrate technical proficiency in multiple Vendor Access Transport, Voice, Power, and SS7 equipment and must be capable of performing a 7x24 rotating shift with limited assistance from focus group.
- This position continually reviews OSP and Central Office installation, turn-up, and maintenance activities, and develops practices, procedures, and guidelines for others to follow in an effective manner, taking into account network reliability, customer service, and cost-effectiveness.
- This position develops, reviews, and issues documentation, such as Methods of Procedures (MOP), Task Orientated Practices (TOP), Technical Job Aids, Product Change Notices (PCN), Vendor Manuals, Standard Configurations, and so forth. This position will assist field operations, installation centers, maintenance centers, capacity provisioning, procurement, market units, and others through appropriate technical review and consultation.
- This position may be called upon to provide targeted training for Center technicians. In addition, as new technologies are introduced, this position will provide course feedback and provide guidance for course development by Field / Center Training and Development.
- Must have minimum 5 years working experience troubleshooting Access transport equipment, including Legacy Digital Loop Carrier and access systems (ALU, Tellabs, Nortel); BBDLC and GPON systems (Adtran / Calix); and TDM Transport and Voice carriers and systems including DMS10, 100, AXE, and 5Es and Tekelec STPs.
- Must possess in-depth knowledge of layer 1 concepts and troubleshooting for DS0, DS1, DS3, SONET OC hierarchy, Gigabit Ethernet, and layer 1 transport data encoding schemes.
- Must have excellent verbal and written skills, including the ability to create MOPs that are clear, understandable, and actionable by others.
- Ability to analyze and correlate complex failure data to effectively determine root cause and drive improvements.
- Knowledge of NMA, RFM, TIRKS, WFA/C, Ops Console, SWITCH, TL1, and other provisioning EMS/CMS support systems.
- Extensive experience and knowledge in Testing and Analysis of network services and network systems.
- Experience in improving network reliability.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Effective oral, written, and presentation skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the business (i.e., executive, market unit, technology group, cross-functional work groups and the industry).
- Strong technical leadership skills.
