Purpose and Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Chief Development and Communications Officer (CDCO) and in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Development Director is responsible for leading development and organizational advancement endeavors to identify, cultivate and solicit annual gifts, major gifts, planned gifts and foundation/corporate gifts. Creates and implements successful programs/activities for donor outreach, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship in support of the organization’s mission.

Working with the CEO, CDCO and the Board of Directors, the Development Director will be responsible for achieving philanthropy metrics/goals, managing a select portfolio of prospects capable of making major and transformational gifts, and creating a cohesive, collaborative and strategic development team.

Job Duties

Strategic Planning

  • Implement and annually update a comprehensive Strategic Development Plan, for the organization.
  • Develop and implement the organization’s annual fundraising goals, metrics and budget.
  • Successfully meet or exceed annual fundraising goals and budget.
  • Monitor and report regularly to the CEO, CDCO, External Committee and Board on the progress of the development program.
  • Support the Board to maximize their effectiveness in fundraising for organizational initiatives

Major Gifts

  • Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors.
  • Perform regular donor/prospect visits based on established metrics
  • Perform appropriate and ethical donor/prospect research to identify major and other donor prospects and maintain a robust donor pipeline.
  • Implement best practices in donor acknowledgments and recognition
  • Responsible for directly pursuing corporate sponsorships, in-kind sponsorships and media sponsorships for events.

Communications/Events

  • Focus donor communication on fostering a sense of connection with staff, survivors, donors, and volunteers.
  • Create, in conjunction with the Director of Communications, all donor communications including case statements, written proposals, appeal letters, giving brochures, press releases and event materials to secure all types of gifts.
  • Partner with the Communications Team on PR, social media, marketing and content development and execution.
  • Oversee the development and execution of fundraising events including signature events and donor appreciation events, including managing and cultivating committee engagement and hiring consultants.

Operations

  • Directs and oversees the receipt of charitable gifts, their financial stewardship and their ultimate distribution to the organization, in conjunction with the Finance Department, to ensure continuous support of Lumina Alliance’s mission
  • Oversees the management of the donor database to ensure compliance and accuracy with data entry performed by the Development Manager.
  • Oversee the implementation of and ensure compliance with ethical fundraising policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and supervision for development staff.

Meetings/Other

  • Professionally represent the organization in the community and engage in community outreach, where appropriate.
  • Participate in regular all-staff, leadership, and other agency meetings.
  • Other duties as required or directed by the CDCO.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Fluency in English, with fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Proven track record of non-profit fundraising experience.
  • Demonstrated success cultivating individual donors and soliciting major gifts.
  • Demonstrated success with managing donor relationships.
  • Proficiency with fundraising and communications software; Experience with Little Green Light preferred.
  • Experience with Google Suite (Drive, Documents, Sheets, Slides) and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

Requirements

  • Must satisfactorily pass a Live Scan background check, paid for by employer.
  • Completion of Lumina Alliance’s 65-hr California State Certified Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Crisis Counselor Training (provided as on-the-job training).
  • Must have reliable transportation.

Position Title: Development Director

Reports to: Chief Development and Communications Officer

Hours: 40 per week

Location: San Luis Obispo County

Salary Range: $43.27 - $48.70 (Bilingual differential of $1/hr if applicable)
