What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technician, Lab 1 position at LyondellBasell Industries?
The Laboratory technician is responsible for learning and providing efficient and cost-effective routine and non-routine analytical and physical testing on products produced and/or samples generated at this site. They are accountable for working safely, independently, and efficiently while always seeking and to reduce costs, improve quality and reduce the potential for injury.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Conduct chemical and physical laboratory testing and analysis as directed to assist production in making qualitative and quantitative analyses and report the results to the requestor as needed
- Understand and apply technical information, diagrams, and procedures related to test methods and standards (ASTM/ISO), instrumentation and quality control pertinent to physical and analytical lab operations.
- Assist with test method development and work instructions as needed
- Monitor product quality to ensure compliance to standards and specifications.
- Compile and interpret results of tests and analyses.
- Observe and record data in an accurate, precise and organized manner as required
- Continue training of all test methods that are related to the physical testing performed in the laboratory
- Operate pertinent laboratory equipment for test specimen creation
- Maintain and clean laboratory instruments and equipment, but not limited to troubleshoot and perform minor maintenance on laboratory instrumentation and equipment
- Conform to safe work practices and compliant to corporate safety program
- Provide and maintain a safe work environment by participating in safety programs, committees, or teams, and by conducting laboratory and plant safety audits.
- Handle hazardous materials in a safe and cautious manner
- If necessary, may perform duties not directly related to position and assist fellow workers.
- Learn and perform routine and non-routine sample analyses and develop as a technician to be able to:
- Document, communicate, and archive analytical results.
- Test quality control standards to ensure validity of sample results.
- Execute routine calibrations as required and maintain associated records.
- Be an active member of the lab/ shift which may include participating on committees dealing with investigations, policy and procedure development, and improving the work place environment.
- Interact well with lab specialist, chemists and operating technician as it pertains to instrument troubleshooting, sample analysis methods, calibration and results.
- Engage in frequent developmental dialog with supervisor and others to continually enhance personal and group performance and development.
Min. Qualifications
- Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language
- Must possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- 1 year experience working in a similar capacity at a manufacturing or laboratory testing facility
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Ability to apply basic mathematics skills
- Ability to analyze data and make decisions accordingly
- Ability to comprehend complex technical topics and specialized information
- Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
- Properly interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
- Possess a professional attitude
- Ability to multitask and utilize the time available to organize and complete work within given deadlines
- Must be willing and able provide overtime coverage, occasional plant call-outs.
- Must be willing and able to work shift work hours alternating periods between days and nights.
- Must be willing to work with hazardous and/or flammable chemicals with proper safety precautions, training, and equipment.
- Must be willing and able to work in environments that require frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting (30 lbs.)
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with a diverse set of cross functional groups.
- Proficient computer skills are required to effectively use requisite software applications.
- Complete tasks wearing required personal protective equipment which may include fire protective clothing, goggles, face shields, gloves, steel toe boots, hearing protection, respirators, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate of Arts in Science, or related degree
- College level chemistry courses for science majors
- Industrial Lab experience
