MSCR or Madison School & Community Recreation is Madison’s public recreation provider. We offer everything you would find in your typical community rec department in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming, arts & enrichment, adult & 50 fitness, sport leagues, outdoor pursuits and more. As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District(MMSD), we also provide afterschool and summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools.

Program Description:

MSCR operates Meadowood Neighborhood Center in collaboration with the City of Madison on Madison's southwest side, in the Meadowood Shopping Center. The purpose of the Meadowood Neighborhood Center is to provide a safe, supervised place for youth during afterschool and evening hours, for neighbors to socialize, and space for MSCR programs such as arts, fitness and much more.

Job Description & Duties:

Purpose of Position:
The Assistant Site Director is responsible for supporting the Youth Program Director and Center Assistant Director in the daily operation of middle and high school after school and summer programs. Staff will provide a safe, enriching, and welcoming environment in which participants engage in activities that build social emotional and academic skills and provide recreational opportunities. The Assistant Site Director will build positive relationships with participants, staff, parents and community partners.

Specific Duties:

  • Facilitate the operation of and supervise the afterschool and summer programs. After School programs may include academic tutoring and/or homework time, recreational activities, social emotional development, field trips and conflict resolution/restorative circles.
  • Facilitate the Youth Program Director duties as needed when they are not present.
  • Fill in for absent staff at Director or Center Assistant Director’s request.
  • Coordinate supply purchases for planned activities with the Youth Program Director and/or Center Assistant Director.
  • Act as parent liaison when Youth Program Director is unable to do so.
  • Assist with managing site administrative systems for data collection and site communication (newsletters, agendas, memos to staff, etc).
  • Become familiar with and ensure staff and participants follow MSCR and MMSD policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate open communication and maintain positive connection and communication with participants, parents, staff, school and community partners.
  • Train, support and assist with evaluation of youth program staff, partners and volunteers.
  • Establish and ensure a physically and emotionally safe program environment.
  • Train, coach and support staff with participant behavior management techniques.
  • Administer first-aid and/or medication to participants as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Youth Program Director and Center Assistant Director.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate check in of participants, maintain attendance records.
  • Ensure staff set-up and clean-up program areas.
  • Facilitate the distribution of snack in compliance with MMSD and DPI standards and regulations.
  • Make announcements and flyers as needed.
  • Stay for late pick-ups and/or no pick up. In the event of an extended late pick up or no pick-up, contact parents, emergency contacts or Dane County Social Services.
  • Communicate and document any significant events (Employee Disciplinary Reports, Incident Reports, Youth Behavior Reports, etc).
  • Communicate any significant staff issues with the Youth Program Director and/or Center Assistant Director.
  • Ensure that program participants and staff follow the site’s behavior and participation expectations

Start Date: 12/11/2023

Work Location: Meadowood Neighborhood Center

Hours/week: Up to 18.5 hrs/week during school year. Hours may occasionally exceed 18.5 hrs/week, but must be pre-approved by the program supervisor. Full time positions available during summer for 9 weeks-

Work hours:

After-School Hours: Mon 2:00pm - 6:00pm, Tuesday - Thursday 4pm - 8pm, Friday 4pm - 6pm

Payrate: 17.00 - 17.00 /hour

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills and recreation program planning knowledge, ability to collaborate and communicate effectively, general computer knowledge and proven leadership abilities.
  • Ability to build positive mentoring relationships with students and staff from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Experience, interest and skill in working with children and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proven dependability, teamwork and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to supervise, coach and motivate program staff and volunteers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPR, AED and First Aid Certification within 3 months of employment. MSCR provides free training for staff.
  • Bilingual - Spanish/Hmong/ASL.
