What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer position at Magic Leap, Inc.?
Job Description
Do you understand structural mechanics? Do you like designing and running your own tests? Do you want to be trained by a renowned experimentalist and Magic Leap Fellow? Apply to Magic Leap, a cutting edge tech company with the most advanced Augmented Reality (AR) device on the market.
We’re looking for a driven individual with the ability to both comprehend problems theoretically and prove them out in the lab. Previous laboratory experience is a plus; a desire to grow, develop, and master unique experimental expertise is paramount. Ideal applicant has 2-10 years of industry experience with a focus on FEA and structural mechanics that will provide a solid foundation to support the physical testing needed for this exciting job.
The position is based at Magic Leap headquarters in Plantation, FL and will require the applicant to be on site in our Gravity Lab. Relocation benefits are available.
Responsibilities:
- Leverage all test and data acquisition techniques available in our world-class structural dynamics laboratory to investigate a broad range of product development issues.
- Work hand-in-hand with our world-class materials and simulation team to bound problems and validate root cause hypotheses.
- Explore and develop new methods to make accurate transient measurements of mechanical behavior on ever-shrinking opto-mechanical products.
- Draw inferences and conclusions from large and potentially noisy data sets and communicate all findings succinctly to stakeholders (fellow engineers, management, executive leadership).
- Apply advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) calculations to large amounts of raw data with custom MATLAB® and Kornucopia® scripts.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of, or strong interest in learning how to make a variety of transient mechanical measurements ranging from severe shock/impact to haptic vibrations to in situ product deformations and strains.
- Sensors utilized include accelerometers (PR & IEPE), strain gages, lasers, gyros, Hall-effect, and ultra high speed video. Physical test equipment includes shock table, large impact pendulum, rotary table, Instron, and several custom test set-ups.
- Knowledge of, or strong interest in learning how to process transient digital data using Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms including:
- Proper sampling methods that avoid aliasing
- Computing DFS & PSD spectra
- Applying HP and LP filters
- Performing Shock Response Spectra analysis when appropriate
- Using a variety of numeric methods to manipulate and process large amounts of physical test data.
- Knowledge of, or strong interest in understanding the electrical requirements for accurate measurements of transient signals from analog transducers that are captured with a Digital-Acquisition-System (DAQ).
- Solid understanding of linear and nonlinear structural mechanics including statics and structural dynamics (vibration and transient shock).
- Experience performing FEA simulations with various forms of nonlinearity including large strains/rotations, material, and contact.
- Experience using closed-form solutions and/or energy methods to help guide/estimate viability of measurements and/or numerical FEA simulations is a plus.
- Comfortable and willing to work with custom scripting in MATLAB to process large amounts of physical measurement data and other data from nonlinear transient FEA simulations.
- Ability to quickly adapt to new workflows and work in a self-directed manner across many projects, including the ability to simultaneously contribute to multiple projects while maintaining deadlines and high quality of work
- Practical approach to problem solving and experience in determining the best mix of physical testing and FEA simulations for a given situation.
- Knowledge of, or strong interest in learning how to verify and validate physical measurement accuracy.
- Experience with ANSYS and LS-DYNA or similar nonlinear transient FEA software.
- Experience with opto-mechanical systems and/or consumer electronics is a plus.
- Ability to work seamlessly with other team members and integrate their knowledge into a given test approach or hypothesis.
- An inquisitive mind that thinks out of the box and is willing to question the status quo.
Education
- Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Mechanics, or equivalent work experience.
