Position Summary
Key Responsibilities
- Plans, organizes, and executes research and development on new or existing projects, products or processes. Is sufficiently flexible to contribute short-term over a broad range of topics.
- Actively participates in the design of experiments and solution of specific problems. Once direction is received and routes towards solution defined, proceeds towards implementation.
- Is expected to assimilate new topics and techniques through utilization of published literature, through interaction with in-house technical expertise and through appropriate external training.
- Communicates on a technical level to assist in using equipment and interpreting the results for development and problem solving activities.
- Assists in development and implementation of quality procedures, work instructions and standards.
Environmental, Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Report any unsafe condition or action to his or her supervisor.
- Never operate a machine or equipment until trained in the operating procedures, hazards, and safeguards and has been assigned to do so by the employer.
- Never remove, displace, destroy, or carry off any safeguard or interfere with the use by any other person.
- Use required personal protective equipment or devices where required.
- Understand your responsibility to the environmental programs, including ISO14001. Understand the actual or potential environmental consequences, when deviating from specified work instructions.
- Attend Environmental, Health and Safety training as required.
Key Qualifications/Requirements
Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Must be capable of communicating technical data and also must be capable of assimilating technical input. Must have the ability to conceptualize and articulate clearly. Ensures that research and development results are properly documented.- Must be capable of demonstrating originality in tackling non-routine problems.
- Is familiar with, and complies with, legislation and regulations relating to laboratory safety, chemical identification, hazard communication, and environmental protection issues.
- Must have an aptitude to understand the fundamentals of instrumentation and equipment to ensure assets are used to their fullest capabilities.
- Must understand the methodology and requirements of research and development. Must understand scientific data, be capable of scientific analysis including error analysis, and must be capable and confident to challenge experimental results where appropriate.
- Must have good interpersonal skills so that the person is capable of working in a team-oriented environment.

Bachelor of Science in polymer science, materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry or biology from a four year college - plus one to three years of relevant experience in a research environment which should include a broad in-depth knowledge of chemistry and materials preferably including the following areas:
- Plastic engineering.
- Adhesion/adhesives and coatings.
- Thin films
- Polymer compounding and processing.
- Analysis techniques including SEM, EDAX, FTIR, DSC/TGA, HPLC/GPC.
- Mechanical characterization of materials.
- Experimental design and statistical data analysis.
- Data acquisition, including computer-aided interfacing.
- Computer systems and technical programming.
- Mathematical analysis including statistical techniques.
