The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking a Nursing Practice Leader to assist with various initiatives and processes within the Magnet Program.

The Nursing Practice Leader (NPL) – Magnet Program Operations Specialist is an expert clinician in nursing practice that has a strong foundation in evidence-based practice and education and a responsibility for ensuring an environment of safe, quality care. The NPL will work in direct collaboration with the Nursing Excellence/Magnet Program Director in providing leadership, strategic planning, and vision for Nursing Excellence including the Magnet Recognition Program® at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC).  The NPL position will support both adult/pediatric ambulatory settings (outpatient clinics, perioperative services, and the emergency department) and adult/pediatric inpatient settings.

Specific Job Duties and Tasks

Provide Leadership and Direct Care for Specialized Patient Population: Lead nursing practice and patient care at the meso/macro system level (i.e., service line, division or department level). Provide leadership for nursing practice or service line(s) based on systematic evaluation, evidence-based practice and research. Assure standard of care delivery and competency of staff across the units and services (macro level). May oversee specialized patient care services (Macro level).

  • Coordinates all Magnet Recognition Program® re-designation activities.
  • Collaborates with key constituents from multiple UI Health Care departments (i.e., Carver College of Medicine, ancillary service departments, MAR COM, safety, quality, patient and staff experience, evidence-based practice, and research teams) to develop operational and marketing plans related to the Magnet Recognition Program® re­designation process.
  • Develops a timeline for data submission and ensures that other members of the organization comply with timelines and data submission requirements. Meets all deadlines as required by the Magnet Recognition Program®.
  • Assists with analysis and summarization of data reports, statistics, and other materials to sustain and advance Magnet Recognition Program® re-designation status.
  • Coordinates, manages, and disseminates patient satisfaction data in collaboration with the Office of Patient Experience.
  • Provides leadership for and participates in unit, divisional, departmental and /or interdepartmental committees, and the community and professional organizations related to Magnet Recognition Program® re-designation.
  • Provides liaison support to or serves as a member of nursing shared governance groups, such as Staff Nurse Council, Night Nurse Council, and Nurse Retention Committee to advance professional practice.
  • Provides ongoing coaching and mentoring of frontline leaders and staff to embed the Magnet Recognition Program® standards, focused on ambulatory and inpatient settings.
  • Works with departmental and interdepartmental groups to sustain and support Magnet Recognition Program® designation.

Specialized Services for Nursing Care: Support the conduct of research and translate findings from evidence-based research into clinical practice. Lead evaluation and implementation of clinical technologies that support patient care.

  • Presents findings from organizational assessments and disseminates information in a variety of forms (oral, electronic, and written) to insure an accurate and timely flow of information to advance Magnet Recognition Program ® designation.
  • Works collaboratively with the CNE and nursing leadership team to promote the image of nursing and retention of the workforce (both inpatient and ambulatory care settings). Activities include maintaining the Magnet display case, assisting with developing and updating Magnet intranet site and other web-based communication platforms, and Nurse Retention Committee (member) as appropriate.
  • Synthesizes information in a concise, logical manner and develops written and verbal reports summarizing key findings.
  • Develops written reports related to assessments and recommends changes in the clinical practice environment which may be required to sustain Magnet Recognition Program® designation.
  • Appropriately integrates Quality Improvement (QI) data into organizational assessment for Magnet Recognition Program ® re-designation report.
  • Works with the Nursing Quality Subcommittee to illustrate in written and graphical form how quality indicators, variances and corrective actions are used to improve care.
  • Serves as back-up Site Coordinator for the submission of nursing sensitive indicators to the National Database for Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI} and other relevant databases.
  • Assists all nursing staff to improve the quality of care using NDNQI data and other relevant outcomes data.
  • Understands how research and evidence-based practice are used by staff to improve care process and patient outcomes.

Provide Education: Provide expert specialty-level education to healthcare staff, patients, students or residents. Communicate detailed, complex medical and technical information to a variety of audiences.

  • Coordinates and manages with the Nurse Retention Committee, the annual RN Satisfaction Survey, dissemination of data and development/monitoring of action plans.
  • Assesses learning needs of staff regarding Magnet Recognition Program®/Standards, re-designation and implements education as needed. Facilitates resources to all shifts based on analysis of learning needs.
  • Ensures the annual review of the Professional Practice Model is conducted with Coordinating Council and requests for updates are implemented and disseminated.
  • Participates in activities that enhance clinical expertise and knowledge of the Magnet Recognition Program®.
  • Provides support to the Chief Nursing Executive/nursing and hospital administration regarding education of the public and internal constituents related to the Magnet Recognition Program®.

Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education: Utilize expert knowledge and skill of compliance standards. Lead development and implementation of procedures and share responsibility for Quality Improvement (QI) plan with appropriate nursing leaders.

  •  Maintains current knowledge of national clinical practice standards and standards of practice from regulatory agencies including the Magnet Recognition Program®.
  • Assures that all data collected for use for Magnet Recognition Program® recognition falls within the policies and procedures for the UI Hospitals and Clinics.
  • Coordinates timely notification to the Magnet Program Office re: leadership changes, critical events and other communication required to maintain designation status in good standing.

Human Resource Management: Use expert knowledge to supervise care delivery of nursing staff, students or residents, providing evaluative feedback and recommendations regarding performance. Hire, develops, and manages the performance of staff and assures compliance with UI policies and procedures.

  • Interacts with nursing staff, patients, medical staff, peers, and others in a professional and cooperative manner.
  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining clinical expertise consistent with patient population requirements and current nursing and medical practice.
  • Develops management and consultant skills consistent with position responsibilities.

Percent of Time: 100% - 40 hours per week
Schedule: 
Monday-Friday 0800-1630, no scheduled weekends or holidays however when Magnet submissions are due, off-shifts and weekend are possible

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Nursing is required
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
  • 3 years of clinical nursing experience including a minimum of 1 year in a clinical leadership role in a similar setting
  • Experience contributing to a clinical information system implementation cycle through areas such as design, workflow analysis, build, training, implementation and support in an ambulatory or hospital setting
  • Ability to lead change in a complex academic healthcare environment and promote the understanding and effective use of information technology across departments
  • Experience authoring training materials and leading training sessions in a variety of formats
  • Excellent communication skills at the verbal, written and presentation level. Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical staff
  • Proven project management skills: ability to coordinate activities and projects across departments, time management, organization of workload, analytical decision- making skills, attention to detail and thoroughness
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Suite of products (such as Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote)
  • Experience working independently with a strong focus on customer service
  • Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment

 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, education, clinical experience and/or change management, in the inpatient and ambulatory setting is highly desirable
  • Understanding of and familiarity with the UIHC professional practice environment
  • Experience in an academic health care environment
  • Certification in a professional nursing role or specialty area
  • DNP or PhD in Nursing or related field
  • Experience with the Magnet Recognition Program® and designation process
