SCOPE OF POSITION:

This position provides grant writing support for The Salvation Army Spokane Corps in order to sustain and develop funding for existing and future programming under the direction of the Development Director.

 

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Prefer Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Proven experience researching and writing successful grant applications
  • Proven ability to manage databases and tracking system for grant applications, contracts, timelines, and budgeting

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Must have the ability to read, interpret, and explain grant applications, proposals, contracts, handbooks, policies, and procedures
  • Highly organized with the ability to effectively handle the demands of multiple projects, implement systems, and follow up processes
  • Able to effectively work under pressure, use independent judgment, and produce a quality product within time constraints
  • Must have a working knowledge of budgeting, contracts, and accounting practices
  • Must be self-motivated and work with minimal supervision
  • Must have the ability to empathize with and advocate for low-income and vulnerable people, and to maintain confidentiality with personal information
  • Preferably will have the knowledge of social services and local resources
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills, with emphasis on effectively working in a team environment and with a diverse population
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both written and orally
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Publisher
  • Must have a working knowledge or be able to learn Lotus Notes and aptitude and ability to learn related technical skills
  • Must have a valid Washington State Driver’s license
  • Must be able to pass a Washington State background check
  • Must be able to make decisions based on policies and procedures manual
  • Must be proficient in typing, organizing, and filing
  • Must have excellent customer services skills
  • Ability to safely perform physical aspects of the job, including lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel required
  • Microsoft PowerPoint, Access, and Publisher helpful
  • Lotus Notes, helpful
  • Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Research grant and funding opportunities available for our local area, create a comprehensive timeline including grant types and application due dates
  • Write and submit grants based on priority and opportunity. Work closely with supervisor and Corps Officer to determine priority and monthly goals.
  • Provide and support the Development Director, Corps Officer, and Social Services Director with grant research, writing, budgeting, tours, meetings, contracting, implementing, and auditing
  • Work toward sustaining funding for programs, expanding programs to meet needs and working toward filling gaps in social services for the community by developing funding
  • Assist in gathering statistics, reporting, and following up with funders/donors
  • Creating databases to meet needs for statistics, contracts, budgeting, etc.
  • Maintain an active data base of grant applications in progress, grant applications submitted, and grant applications accepted or denied
  • Maintain both an electronic and paper file of every application written and submitted
  • Gain great working knowledge of all Salvation Army programs, staff, missions, and needs
  • Assist with writing strategic plans
  • Gather and distribute funding resources and opportunities. Create a calendar of due dates, actions, and proposals.
  • Maintains records and files by following procedures for retention, protection, retrieval, transfer, and disposal of records
  • Represent The Salvation Army by attending community meetings and events as directed
  • Network with other agencies and community supports
  • Advocate for The Salvation Army programs and participants
  • Attends trainings and Staff Meetings as directed
  • Other duties as assigned

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:   

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
  • Ability to operate a telephone
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds (usually file boxes)

  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer
  • Ability to understand written information

COVID-19:

Once a conditional offer has been made and then accepted by the applicant, The Salvation Army may then ask specific questions about vaccination status, if applicable.  If the applicant requests an exemption, then processes described in this summary should be followed.

 

BENEFITS:

A generous benefits package is included with full-time positions:  paid holidays, vacation time, sick time, and medical, vision, and dental insurance.

Health Insurance:  Low bi-weekly premiums for employee-only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside a Kaiser service area.  Voluntary 1 and family coverage at additional cost.  Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance are offered.

Life and Voluntary Options.  An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees.  Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Retirement Plans:  Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.

Parental Leave:  The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.

Sick Leave:  12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months’ service time.

Paid Vacation:

  • Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions
  • Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions
  • Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months’ service time

 

Paid Holidays:  13 designated holidays 1 floating holiday per year
