The Salvation Army is seeking a Janitor to provide custodial services to our Seattle Social Services Department. This role helps maintain the cleanliness of Seattle Social Service’s sites while complying with all safety procedures and standards. Responsibilities include performing all building cleaning necessary, maintaining a safe environment, and correct usage of all sanitation chemicals.
The Janitor works closely with both the custodial and maintenance department to ensure facilities are clean, garbage and recycling are taken out in a timely manner and making sure that all safety equipment is being used when necessary. This position will receive supervision from the Janitorial Supervisor.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform all phases of building cleaning necessary to create and maintain a safe environment for residents, staff, and others that use the facilities (including but not limited to, garage parking area, alley, walkways, landscaping, building exteriors, and interiors).
- Perform Daily duties of cleaning and maintaining all restrooms, hallway, and common areas
- Correctly maintain and use sanitation chemicals
- When at the WBC site- Coordinate through the T-Card system on completing maintenance requests, which include turning over rooms, cleaning lockers and bunks, following bed bug protocol, painting, etc.
- Coordinate with immediate supervisor(s) regarding basic maintenance needs - bulb replacement & disposal, minor paint and drywall repair, light carpentry, etc
- Set up tables, chairs, and other items in preparation for programs or events being held at the site.
- Maintain inventory and coordinate with supervisor for purchase of janitorial equipment and supplies
- Perform regular building inspections to assess maintenance needs and coordinate repairs and/or maintenance if appropriate with supervisor(s).
- Perform regular vehicle maintenance by washing and vacuuming vehicles as needed inside and out.
- Monitor and maintain property outside of the building - removal of graffiti, trash, and debris
- Make sure the building meets all safety codes - all exits and stairwells are clear, fire extinguishers functioning, etc - coordinate with supervisor as needed for necessary equipment or supplies
- Maintain garbage, food waste, and recycling dumpsters in accordance with the pick-up schedule
- Operate all vehicles within safety and compliance protocols for TSA employees.
- Respond to emergency situations that may arise making independent decisions within policy guidelines, as necessary.
- Institute security procedures should a critical or threatening incident arise. Provide timely and appropriate notification to police, fire, emergency medical and supervisory authorities.
- Work cooperatively with other Salvation Army staff and programs.
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED, required
- One year of experience as a Janitor or Custodian, required
- Experience doing janitorial duties in a shelter or shelter-like environment (such as a hospital or assisted living facility), preferred
- Experience in customer service, preferred

Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.
Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months’ service time.
Paid Vacation:
- Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions.
- Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions.
- Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months’ service time.
Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays 1 floating holiday per year
