The Internship:
This is a summer research internship program for medical students and college students planning on medical school who ultimately want to practice medicine in a rural Maine setting. Candidates should have strong interest in rural research, good organization and writing skills, be self-directed and curious about improving the health care and access of rural Mainers.
Summer interns will help develop a rural research project in a rural community and will be embedded in that community for at least four weeks for data collection and analysis. Funding is available for housing costs during those immersive 4 weeks living in a rural community. Students will be paired with a mentor and will be expected to finish a scholarly project for presentation at the annual MERGE Collaborative conference and ideally for publication.
What we are looking for:
* Any medical student in Maine (UNE, TUSM Maine-track)
* Any medical student from a rural part of Maine (see HRSA definition, below) who is attending medical school out of state
* Any senior college student from a rural part of Maine who has been accepted into medical school (regular or early assurance, medical school does not need to be in Maine)
* Any college student from a rural part of Maine who is planning to apply to medical school and has already taken the MCAT test (see HRSA definition, below)

Position Summary:
* Location: Portland, ME, and other rural community locations as assigned.Hours/Details:
* Temporary full-time positions, 40 hours per week.
* Combination in-person and remote positions.
* Hiring 4 interns.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
* Education: Student who is currently enrolled in a two-year Associate's degree program, four-year Bachelor's degree program, or graduate-level program preferred.
* License/Certifications: N/A
* Experience: N/A
* Strong analytical thinking.
* Must work independently, take initiative to complete assigned projects with minimal direction, and be able to prioritize tasks within an assigned project.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality in the performance of duties.
* Excellent communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and other technologies as needed.
