Job Summary:

This position will play an integral role in the member service and organizational strength of our association. The Financial Accountant will perform bookkeeping and accounting support and prepare accounting statements and financial reports for a select group of members. Additionally, the Financial Accountant will provide financial technical assistance and training to community water systems members, focusing on areas of financial compliance, governance, and accounting.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develops financial transactions system by establishing a chart of accounts, defining bookkeeping policies and procedures.
  • Record day-to-day financial transactions and complete the posting process.
  • Reconcile sales taxes, payroll taxes, gas taxes and bank accounts.
  • Monitor financial transactions and reports.
  • Produce monthly financial statements for the board of trustees.
  • Produce check warrants for municipal government.
  • Process accounts receivable and payable.
  • Manages member records and ensures filings are done in a timely fashion.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying requirements; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing reports; advising management on needed actions.
  • Provide consulting to members in the following areas:

o Compliance

  • SDWA regulations, PUC regulations, GAAP, operating reports, record retention schedules and Governance.

o Accounting

  • Bookkeeping, rate setting, budgeting for operations and capital improvement, audit preparation, interpreting audit results, cash management, internal controls, tracking inventory, asset valuation and management.
  • Establish and maintain professional trusting relationships with members
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance required or equivalent combination of education andexperience
  • Valid Driver’s license and has proof of insurance required
  • Some travel which may include occasional overnight and weekend travel

Job Related Experience:

  • Minimum of 4 years accounting/bookkeeping experience; non-profit accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with QuickBooks or other accounting software
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite including Excel; Word

· Excellent attention to detail

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and financial data analysis.

· Ability to read and understand financial statements.

· Thorough understanding of bookkeeping/accounting practices and procedures, with ability to train others in related practices and procedures.

· Knowledge of or ability to learn terms and conditions overseen by public utilities commission.

· Ability to maintain culture appropriate professionalism in appearance and interactions.

· Must have ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.

Physical Abilities and Environmental

Traveling to businesses and hotels (some overnight travel), flexible work hours including nights and weekends; Extended workdays may be required to accomplish tasks and meet workload demands during peak periods. Requires extended periods of walking or standing, computer keying, working at a desk, and viewing spreadsheets and other written material. Ability to stand, walk, as well as talk, see and hear. There is also the potential for kneeling and lifting of objects up to 50 lbs.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $70,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
