The Newsletter Product Manager will lead our teams in producing the essential suite of Maine Trust for Local News editorial newsletters. This position is the authority on tools within the newsletter platform, and best practices for setup and deliverability of content.

Key Responsibilities: 

• Newsletter Management: Ensure the production and delivery of all newsletters, closely tracking the workflow of editorial team to meet delivery deadlines, across all newsrooms. Optimize product design and deliverability of each newsletter. Identifies opportunities for short-term (seasonal) newsletter products to be deployed by the newsrooms. Regularly monitors list health and manages contacts in newsletter platform. 

• Platform Management: Train reporters and editors on newsletter platform, stay up to date on changes and new tools and rolls those changes out to users. Uses external email testing tools to optimize email deliverability and inbox placement. Act as primary contact for email service provider vendor management. Triage and interface on technical issues with vendor. 

• Collaboration: Meets regularly with reporters and editors to determine content elements and organization with the goal of high levels of engagement and retention. Works closely with newsrooms and audience team to determine and develop viable newsletter products, make improvements to current products and determine success criteria for those products. Uses those thresholds to determine when and how to eliminate products. Advise with cross functional teams on other monetization opportunities including ads and other audience promotions within newsletters. 

• Lead with Data: Establish and report on KPIs for newsletter products, especially around engagement (opens and clicks) and retention (preventing unsubscribes), and brief key newsroom and strategy stakeholders. Use content performance metrics to help editors understand how content placement performs in newsletters and to make future recommendations. 

Qualifications

• Experience in journalism.  

• 3 years of experience in email product management or newsletter strategy, preferably in a digital news environment 

• A collaborative attitude and eagerness to work in partnership with site leaders. 

• Experience with analytics tools such as Parse.ly, Looker, Google Analytics, and ESPs like Active Campaign. 

• An eye for design and readability, experience in content product design, organization, and aesthetics. 

• Understanding of and passion for the mission of the Maine Trust for Local News, and Maine.
