What are the responsibilities and job description for the CNO - MaineHealth position at MaineHealth?

    Position Summary

MaineHealth is seeking a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to lead the strategic direction and continuous improvement of nursing at MaineHealth. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the next CNO will coordinate efforts across MaineHealth’s family of 12 hospitals to expand the nursing workforce and to deliver consistent, excellent care. This is an excellent opportunity for a collaborative nurse leader to make a lasting impact on MaineHealth and to be a key partner in achieving the organization’s vision: Working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.

MaineHealth has been recognized as one of the nation’s top integrated health care delivery networks. The MaineHealth system provides a complete range of healthcare services, from primary care to tertiary care. MaineHealth truly lives by its values and remains committed to its mission. As a learning organization that consistently works at all levels to improve both its culture and its outcomes. The largest employer in the state of Maine and the largest healthcare provider in Northern New England, MaineHealth has consistently earned a national reputation for innovations in health promotion and improving the health of the communities it serves.

The CNO should have extensive experience as a chief nurse executive in a hospital setting and health system setting. The exceptional candidate is dynamic, educationally prepared with a minimum of a bachelor's degree in nursing with a proven track record of achieving goals in a highly matrixed organization. Because the role is strategically oriented, CNO should be a transformational leader who possess the skills to clearly articulate a vision, be innovative, inspire others, and set high expectations for achievement.

MaineHealth will expect its next CNO to

    • Provide a vision and direction for nursing throughout the health system.
    • Establish a nursing governance structure. To ensure that care is delivered in a consistent, scientific framework throughout the health system, a governance structure should be formed for nursing staff, nurse managers, nurse educators, and senior nursing leadership to discuss challenges, issues, and concerns that affect patient care and management activities. This type of forum will engage all levels of nursing leadership in joint planning of activities designed to enhance professional nursing practice, set annual strategic goals and initiatives, and provide final approval of policies and procedures.
    • Ensure quality by identifying system wide nursing quality indicators, participating in the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators,® and analyzing benchmark quality data to determine the overall level of nursing's clinical performance.
    • Establish a nursing strategic plan that targets quality performance, implementing a consistent care model and monitoring its effectiveness, and simultaneously developing structures and processes that track and trend outcome measures.
    • Provide strategic direction by establishing goals and clearly defined targets to achieve them. The CNO will work in concert with nursing leadership at the individual campus level to ensure that goals are clearly articulated and easily understood. Nursing strategic priorities should be congruent with system goals and promote the participation of nurses in decision-making.
    • Foster staff development. Ensuring the availability of a well-educated nursing and non-nursing clinical workforce to meet the needs of an increasingly complex patient population will be a major focus of this CNO. To achieve this the CNO will take the lead in identifying, developing, and maintaining strategic academic partnerships.
    • Create partnerships to support the pipeline for new clinical team members.
    • Build structures, processes, and ensure substantial resources are in place to facilitate nursing and non-nursing clinical education in collaboration with the MaineHealth Chief Academic Affairs Officer and Chief People Officer.
    • Develop a system-wide model for the professional development of nursing staff by setting expectations and designing goals, structures, systems, and metrics for nursing staff development (such as a clinical recognition program and national certification). The CNO will help create an infrastructure that allows the system to offer a comprehensive orientation curriculum, continuing education, and in-service education to support professional development needs, regulatory requirements, and strategic initiatives.
    • Regulate nurse credentialing. Ensuring that nurses at all levels of the organization remain competent in the care they provide to patients is an essential component of the CNO's role. The competency of nursing staff must be consistent across MaineHealth. System-wide competency programs need to be established and maintained, and outcomes need to be reported through the system-wide nursing governance structure.
    • Foster open communication and collaboration. The CNO will structure communication processes to ensure collaboration and strong decision making.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
      • BSN or Master’s degree in nursing required with Master’s degree preferred. At least 10 years of management experience.
      • At least 10 years of progressive leadership in nursing is required.
      • Excellent financial management, delegation, and organizational skills.
      • Proven ability to create external partnerships.
      • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
      • Strong strategic planning skills and demonstrated project management experience.
      • Established analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
      • Capacity to collaborate with diverse populations of team members and physicians to gain consensus and achieve results.
      • Proven writing, public speaking and presentation skills.
