Manhattan Charter Schools is looking to hire a Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Mission

MCS will prepare its students to achieve high academic levels in the four core academic subject areas and music, to communicate effectively in verbal, mathematical and musical languages, and to apply critical thinking processes and ethical standards to learning, living and problem solving.

We are located on the Lower East Side. MCS prides itself on delivering rigorous academic instruction and fostering a culture of high expectations. Opened in September 2005, the school currently serves 274 students and their families from kindergarten through fifth grade. Approximately 79% of MCS students live below the poverty line, and more than 95% are minority. The school received a full, five-year renewal in July 2010. Through its work, MCS is demonstrating that all children, regardless of race or economic status, can succeed when given equal access to quality education.

MCS's program has been developed to give a diverse student body access to an academically challenging elementary school that offers an arts- and culture-rich program that includes daily music instruction, French, art, and physical education, all beginning in kindergarten. Responsibilities:

Academic Vision & Strategy

  • Sets and communicates the vision, with the help of key stakeholders, for academic excellence
  • Defines the academic strategic plan by leading the academic planning process including naming academic goals and priorities, identifying key performance indicators, and creating a system for monitoring and evaluating performance against the goals.
  • Supports academic teams in building out short and long term strategies to achieve the academic vision and provide the right tools, coaching, and support to faculty and leaders to drive outcomes in schools.
  • Ensures school leaders, and teachers can meet the goals and priorities by developing and/or providing the enabling tools, structures, and systems necessary to drive continuous improvement aligned to our academic vision.
  • Evaluates and ensures that our K-8 curriculum enables us to meet the academic bar of excellence and meet the obligations of state guidelines which may include piloting, selecting, and overseeing the purchasing of curriculum
  • In partnership with the leadership team, builds and maintains a system for district visualization of student data, including but not limited to attendance, behavior, and assessment data
  • Uses a variety of methods to consistently reviews student performance and teacher effectiveness data, and supports school leaders to do the same, and responds swiftly to support or re-adjust

Academic Team Leadership

  • Participates in MCS’s leadership team that sets and oversees the strategy for all MCS programming.
  • Works with MCS leadership to develop a vision and comprehensive long-term plan for the design of the schools.
  • Recommends to the MCS Executive Director system-wide goals, monitors, analyzes data, and reports back to the Executive Director on the progress toward achieving the goals.
  • Oversees and integrates the work of MCS Special Education and Response to Instruction and Intervention departments into all academic priorities and drives improvement.
  • Builds and manages a high-functioning, cohesive, effective team of individuals who provide a variety of essential academic support services to all schools.
  • Provides leadership, development, feedback, and support to ensure that each member of the team is on track to meet his/her goals; evaluate performance
  • Analyzes programming across the region to ensure a system of supports to meet the needs of all students, including special populations (e.g. special education and English language learners)

Training and Development

  • Plans and execute on the delivery of summer and weekly professional development for teachers and leaders, including designing schedules, content, and lesson plans, and ensuring high quality delivery of professional development aligned to our academic vision.
  • Assists executive director with the planning and execution of school leader meetings to ensure alignment with academic vision and priorities.
  • In alignment with MCS’s academic vision, builds and supports a system for improving teacher and leader content knowledge and pedagogy through a variety of structures, including and not limited to content teams, co-observations, video study, etc.
  • Partners with the Executive Director and HR/Talent team to attract, develop, and retain school leaders and emerging school leaders.

Compliance

  • Ensures region-wide state and federal academic compliance.
  • Supports school leaders through compliance issues, including monitoring academic areas of Arkansas Standards for Accreditation; internal, federal, and Arkansas Department of Education monitoring of special education; and school and family engagement and assessment laws.
  • Oversee the district’s At Risk programs for implementation and compliance

Qualifications

  • A deep commitment to the mission of MCS and an unwavering belief in the potential of all of our students.

  • A strong desire to collaborate with school leaders and central office teammates in service to five unified schools.
  • 8 years of work experience, including 3 years of as a high-performing principal and/or principal manager, who has experience closing the student achievement gaps between racial, ethnic and economic groups; K-12 experience strongly preferred.
  • Deep experience in the design, integration, implementation, and management of an instructional model, including knowledge of curricula, instructional practices, school operations and management, and talent development.
  • Ability to analyze and use data on a regular basis to drive decision making
  • Possess a deep commitment to both racial equity and improving the lives of kids from low-income communities; experience working within predominantly low-income communities; required
  • Must live in Helena or Blytheville, AR or a surrounding community, or be willing to relocate

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $75,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
