Candidates will be hired as subcontractors and paid a daily rate. Candidates will also be expected to provide their own gear for working in chest-deep water (waders or wetsuit).
Work schedule includes 40 hours/week. Work in excess of 40 hours/week and/or 10 hours/day may be required to complete project deadlines, including weekend shifts.
Anticipated duration is 2-3 months, with the potential to extend contract based on funding and performance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Participate in an aquatic invasive plant control project in a marsh environment.
· Assist SCUBA divers while working on boats, from shore, and while wading.
· Install benthic barriers by hammering 2-foot-long rebar staples, carrying and placing gravel bags, and other ballast materials.
· Build and maintain fences.
· Use chainsaws, brush cutters, and hand tools to remove emergent woody vegetation.
· Drive ATVs, UTVs, 4x4 trucks, and trailers to move people and equipment throughout the project site.
Professional Requirements and Certifications
REQUIRED
· One full year of related work experience.
· Clean driving record and ability to pass a background security clearance
· Ability to proficiently drive vehicles in 4-wheel drive conditions
· Ability to perform heavy lifting (50 pounds)
· Ability to perform strenuous physical activity, work in wet and cold conditions, and work extended hours. This is a physically demanding and mentally taxing project in the outdoors. Field work can, at times, be tedious.
· Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
PREFERRED
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Wildlife, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or similar discipline; OR coursework toward a degree in these fields
- Ability to proficiently operate a chainsaw or brush cutter, and/or chainsaw/brush cutter certification
- Motorized boating experience and/or boater’s safety course
- Trailer towing experience
- ATV operations or ATV certified
- Use of remote mapping software
- Small engine maintenance
- Familiarity with aquatic invasive plant control efforts in the Lake Tahoe Basin
