JOB SUMMARY
A pipe foreman is a working supervisor and provides direction to a construction crew to performed underground utility installation and repair. Documents production and manpower along with site safety and construction logs. Routinely communicates with superintendent to meeting production goals while maintain the highest level of safety and quality. Performs tasks involving physical labor on heavy civil construction projects in general, underground utility work in particular. May operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments. May clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris, and remove asbestos, lead, and other hazardous waste materials.CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure that all health and safety requirements are adhered to on a daily basis.
  • Performs duties as assigned by company’s health and safety program.
  • Communicates daily with the superintendent to ensure work expectations are being fulfilled.
  • Cleans and prepares construction sites to eliminate possible hazards and ensures housekeeping.
  • Understands production goals set forth by superintendent or project manager and works to meet and/or exceed those goals while maintaining safety and quality.
  • Routinely communicates with superintendents to identify and capture all changes including but not limited to different site conditions, delays beyond our control, quantity over/under runs and other potential job impacts
  • Completes all necessary paperwork accurately on a daily basis including but not limited to, timesheets, quantity report sheets, packing slips, trucking tickets, manifests, daily logs, and toolbox talks.
  • Performs inspection of the job site, workers, subcontractors and public to ensure performance and safety.
  • Communicates with the superintendent to coordinate upcoming work, equipment necessities and/or shop maintenance as required.
  • Communicate with clients and inspectors as required.
  • Coordinates subcontractors to ensure scheduling, safety and quality are maintained to the highest standards.
  • Responsible to document work for “as-built” and red-line drawings.
  • Reads and interprets plans, instructions, and specifications to determine work activities and communicates the directions clearly with the crews.
  • Controls traffic passing near, in, and around work zones.
  • Signals equipment operators to facilitate alignment and movement of machinery, equipment, and materials.
  • Directs digging of ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes.
  • Understands installation and assembly means and methods for all types of underground utility, including storm and sanitary sewers, and water line and services.
  • Understand different pipe materials (PVC, HDPE, DIP, CIP, etc.) and knows their installation requirements.
  • Measures, marks, and records openings and distances to lay out areas where work will be performed.
  • Loads, unloads, and identifies building materials, machinery, and tools, and distributes them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications.
  • Erects and disassembles scaffolding, shoring braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures,
  • Must take training courses offered by the company and/or union to improve overall skill proficiency.
  • All other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Must have knowledge in building, civil and environmental construction. Must have ability to supervise a team of leaders and to schedule and perform multi-tasking work in a fast-paced environment. Must have strong knowledge of layout, grades and survey equipment to control grading operations. Needs knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings and other structures such as highways and roads, along with knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models. Must understand construction math and its applications. Needs knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance and have knowledge of safe operating procedures to promote worker and public safety. Must have knowledge of the practical applications of engineering science and technology as it applies to the principles, techniques and procedures required to perform construction tasks. Must be proficient with the English language for both oral and written communication. Needs the ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions. Must perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting at least 40 pounds is required, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Must have OSHA 30-hour construction safety training (minimum requirement). Must have other certifications as required for the work. Multiple certifications and training are preferred. Minimum of 3 years’ experience as working foreman required.
