General Information
The Marshall County Solid Waste District is a county agency responsible for educating and enabling all county residents to recycle and dispose of their household hazardous waste (HHW) safely. Our HHW facility, the Recycle Depot, is open year-round to provide drop-off recycling and disposal. We currently have 5 staff members: Executive Director, Environmental Educator, two Hazardous Materials Specialists, and one part-time office assistant. We have a busy, friendly work environment that focuses on helping residents dispose of problem household waste and caring for the environment. We are open Monday – Friday from 8:30 – 3:30 p.m. and the first and third Saturdays of the month from 8 – 12 noon.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent, equipment experience and training, and demonstrated leadership ability
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, follow all policies and procedures, and respect all safety guidelines
- Ability to work between 15-20 hours a week (hours are flexible)
- A valid driver’s license
Duties and Responsibilities
- Being the friendly “face of the Depot” by helping the public with questions and information about our services and assisting the public with drop-off recycling
- Keeping the facility, dock, and vehicles clean and stocked with supplies
- Performing basic housekeeping tasks to maintain OSHA compliance for safety and warehouse operations
- Collecting and baling cardboard, paper, and Styrofoam
- Sometimes working extended and irregular hours including weekends and holidays on an as-needed basis
Doing this job involves following all OSHA and DOT procedures and regulations for our industry. We will provide all the necessary training and equipment to comply with these procedures and guidelines. You’ll be overseen by the Director and assigned tasks by the hazardous materials specialists.

Physical Effort and Work Environment
- You will spend at least part of your time outside in the elements year-round. You will be provided with some cold weather gear and uniforms.
- You must also be capable of doing physical labor that requires bending and lifting. This includes moving large containers up to 55-gallon drums and cubic yard boxes with a hand dolly or pallet jack.
- Training in forklift operation and/or experience with baling equipment is preferred, but we will also train you on site as needed.
- The work environment includes proximity to the storage of hazardous materials.
- You must be able to be on your feet much of the day and be able to handle and count money.
- You must be able to interact effectively and courteously with the public, businesses, and vendors.
