Description:
Under the direction of the Youth Services Manager, this person will ensure the growth and development of the young adult department of the Martinsburg Berkeley County Public Library and its branch libraries through collection development, services, programs, and outreach.
Duties
- Orders new young adult books and materials and weeds the collection.
- Helps develop young adult collections at Martinsburg Public Library, North Berkeley Public Library, and Musselman-South Berkeley Community Library at each branch manager’s discretion.
- Assists with general operations of both the children’s library and young adult library: pulls holds, shelves books , insures cleanliness of space
- Arranges and presents outreach programs at local schools and community events
- Provides resource instruction for middle and high school students.
- Plans, conducts, and promotes programs that promote literacy and social development of local youth
- Makes sure print promotional materials for all youth MPL programs are available for patrons and up to date with current programs.
- Creates promotional material using Canva, and ensures all programs are promoted on MBCPL social media and website.
- Oversees support staff’s creation of teen book displays and assists manager and support staff in decorating the library quarterly based on season or theme.
- Asists manager in planning and promoting the county-wide Summer Reading Program for pre-readers, children, and teens. In charge of Teen programming and Teen reading challenges for the Summer Reading Program.
- Helps train new support staff.
- Acts as manager when the manager is unable to work, and completes these tasks in addition to the aforementioned duties:
- Ensure that the children's circulation desk is adequately staffed.
- Ensure that children and teen programs are continuing and presents programs.
- Is the point of contact for operation questions and requests from staff or patrons pertaining to the children’s and young adult library.
Schedule:
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays 9:30-5
Thursdays 9:30-7
Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor’s Degree. One year of professional experience in a public library. Customer service experience.
Preferred: Master’s degree in library science. Experience in a children’s library.
