We are seeking an enthusiastic Kitchen Assistant to join our team in a team-oriented commercial kitchen setting. As a Kitchen assistant - generalist, you will be responsible for creating our signature baked products (Egg Tarts, Bo Lo Bao) as well as tasty, cultural treats such as spring rolls and dumplings (Siu Mai) and bringing them to the Ann Arbor / Ypsilanti communities.

Please note we have 2 Kitchen locations:

  • Primary = 1608 Jackson Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48103
  • Secondary = 4175 Whitmore lake Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48105

Candidates are expected to be able and willing to reliably commute to both locations

This position is open to both part time (approx 8-12 hours a week) and full time opportunities

Full time would require fixed schedule 4 hours shifts during weekdays plus at least 1 shift on either Saturday or Sunday

Compensation:

- Part Time Base pay starts at $12 an hour during on-the-job training

- Part Time Base pay increases to $14 after training completion (and further based on consistency/performance)

- Performance bonus available based on productivity (meeting quota within planned hours)

- Spot bonus available every pay cycle (every 2 weeks) based on business milestones (___ tarts sold, successful first pop-up at new location)

- Referral Bonus program available

Responsibilities:
- Prepare, bake and cook a variety of cuisines (pastries, bread, springrolls, Siu Mai, mango sago, savory treats)

- Warewashing after baking to ensure kitchen is pristine and ready for next baking session

- Follow recipes and instructions to ensure consistency and quality

- Monitor inventory levels and notify manager of low-stocks for ordering

- Maintain a clean and organized work area

- Work with the kitchen team to ensure timely delivery of goods for catering events and pop-up sales (e.g. Farmers Market)

- Communicate with other team members (e.g. sales staff) to continuously improve on customer experience, employee experience and overall team productivity

- [Full Timer] Ability to coordinate and handle Pick-up and Walk-In customer order flow

Required Qualifications:
- Ability to respond to communications within 24 hours on Phone Apps (Discord, Square team)

- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

- Proficiency in using knives/cleavers, measuring scales

- Adeptness and and hand dexterity

- Comfort dealing with animal products (meat, shrimp, fish)

- Knowledge of cooking techniques and methods (Steaming / Stir-fry / Deepfry)

- Comfort with hot appliances, operating walk-in fridge/freezers and countertop deep fryers

- Ability to read and follow recipes accurately

- Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment

- Excellent time management skills

- Open to work evenings and weekends (Thursday/Friday/Saturday) as needed

- Access to a car or other means to commute to and from work independently

- [Full Time] Comfortable with customer interactions, cash operation, PoS operation

- [Full Time] Comfortable with order to pickup workflow and related problem solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience working in a commercial kitchen setting

- Experience operating a 3-compartment sink and commercial dishwasher/dishline

- Experience with traditional Asian-cooking techniques and dumpling wrapping.

- ServSafe Food Handler or Food Manager Certification (Manager Certification required for consideration for Kitchen Manager & Ops Manager)

- Access to a Intermediate SUV or bigger for work purposes
