MAA is currently accepting applications for the position of Airport Division Fire Chief, Fire Operations within the Airport Fire & Rescue Department (FRD) at the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall).

The Airport Division Fire Chief is a managerial-level position, which involves work with other Fire and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) Officers to ensure the coordination and delivery of all operational and training departmental programs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Developing, instituting, coordinating, and overseeing mandatory proficiency training and ensuring any additional training required for the BWI FRD;
  • Maintaining necessary records and preparing reports, including but not limited to payroll, overtime records, sick leave, accident leave, training reports, and any other pertinent records required by the Administration and or the State of Maryland;
  • Functioning as a shift commander responsible for managing the activities of one of four 24-hour rotating shifts;
  • Responding to and directing firefighting, rescue, and other emergency operations at the scene of an incident as the incident commander or at the direction of the incident
  • commander using the National Incident Management System (NIMS); and
  • Developing a training plan for the BWI FRD; plans, develops and implements comprehensive programs and curriculums and recommends new training programs and techniques to improve the operations. Manages the Maryland State and National Fire Service Certification Program for all BWI FRD Divisions.

This position is an emergency essential position. All employees designated as emergency essential are required to be available to work during weather, operational, and/or disaster emergency conditions. Furthermore, this position requires work in a 24-hour facility and you must be available to work any shift as required by the operational needs of the MAA.

This position is located at BWI Marshall Airport in Anne Arundel County, MD

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Four years experience as a career fire officer, in the rank of Lieutenant or above, at an airport or municipal fire department.
Licenses & Certifications

1. Employees in this classification are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees must possess a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
2. In accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, an employee in this option will be required to have the following certifications:
NFPA 1003 Airport Firefighter
NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level II
NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level I
NFPA 1041 Emergency Service Instructor Level I
3. A candidate appointed to a position in this option must possess a Maryland Emergency Medical Technician -Basic (EMT-B) license issued by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems within six months after appointment to this classification.
4. Employees must obtain an Airfield Operator Permit in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 11.03.01.04, Control of Vehicular Traffic on the Air Operations Area, at the time of appointment.

1. Persons appointed to positions in this class must maintain a prescribed level of physical fitness, and will be required to take a medical examination to determine continued physical ability to perform the work.
2. Employees are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link (telephone or pager) for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.
3. Employees in this classification are considered "Essential Employees" and will be required to adhere to all policies and procedures relating to "Essential Employee" status.
4. Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
5. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
