POSITION DUTIES

The Comptroller of Maryland, Field Enforcement Bureau is recruiting for the position of Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) Engine Laboratory Technician (Octane Specialist) to work in the Motor Fuel Testing Lab located in Jessup, Maryland.

This position performs advanced work in the repair, maintenance, and operation of CFR Engines as well as conducting standard laboratory testing and tasks.

This position performs octane analysis for gasoline and Cetane analysis for diesel samples. An employee in this classification independently performs the more complicated CFR Engine maintenance and repairs.

This employee makes the required daily and periodic 500-, 800- and 2,000-hour inspections, and makes minor or major repairs as needed, to include top and bottom overhauls to CFR Engines.

The incumbent will closely follow American Society for Testing Methods (ASTM) to run octane analysis and properly maintain CFR engines.

Proper engine performance is critical to ensure consumer quality control and to maintain Maryland’s reputation as a leader in motor fuel testing and regulation.

The laboratory chemist portion of this position consists of routinely testing motor fuels and operating various laboratory instruments in accordance with the American Society for Testing Materials International (ASTM) methodologies.

General supervision is received from the Lab Manager through observation, reports, and records of completed maintenance, repairs, and tests.

This work is performed in a laboratory setting. Employees are required to observe safety protocols to minimize exposure to toxic substances and fumes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education : Completion of two years of education from an accredited college or university.

Experience : Three years of full-time experience performing tests and major repair work on octane and cetane testing engines, one year must have been as a supervisor of an octane / cetane engine testing section.

NOTE : Candidates may substitute two years of experience as an advanced level Octane Engine Operator for the required education and experience.

For education obtained outside of the , you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from a standard high school and successful completion of an Automotive Mechanic, Aviation Mechanic or Heavy Equipment Mechanic course from a recognized technical school, either military or civilian
  • Mechanical background with internal combustion engine and or any technical school equivalent
  • Prior knowledge of working with CFR Engines, Experience rebuilding the CFR engines

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are required to possess the ability to perform the duties in an area in which there is constant noise generated by the test engines.
