General Summary/Overview

The Manager, Enterprise Operations Insights is responsible for the direct management of 6-10 full-time employees, as well as consulting resources where necessary for larger projects. The incumbent will manage team resources and the execution of data analytics projects which span multiple departments across the MGB system. The manager oversees our data and analytics dissemination across the MGB system, sites and affiliates through the maintenance, support, and development for programs such as Enterprise Asset Management, COVID and other system priorities defined by the MGB COO’s office. The manager will ensure accurate and quality reporting of data through these platforms, and devise strategies to improve the dissemination of these data and analyses in a quality manner that meets the department’s standards. The manager provides administrative leadership for the realization of our analytics strategy as it pertains to our broader organizational goals. This includes organizing projects, workgroups, and steering committees, as needed, to achieve timely resolution of issues and to achieve goals; working closely with internal stakeholders, MGB system, site and affiliate leadership. The manager will work toward moving forward the vision and strategy of disseminating analytics throughout our complex, multi-campus organization. 2

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic & Operational Analytic Support

1. Manages 6-10 full-time staff of data analysts. Oversees recruitment, training, professional development, and evaluation of staff.

2. Works with MGB COOs and EAM domain leadership (i.e. ambulatory, perioperative, peri-procedural, access center, behavioral health, inpatient, emergency department, etc.) in the development of a measurement framework to establish organizational KPIs with common definitions and operational workflows

3. Elicits data and reporting requirements from administrators, clinicians, and other staff, using interviews, document analysis, requirements workshops, site visits, use cases, scenarios, data analysis, task, and workflow analysis

4. Performs analysis of existing data sources and reports within the electronic medical record, MGB Enterprise Data Warehouse, and other internal and external data sources in order to develop insights into strategic and tactical operations challenges throughout MGB.

5. Independently creates and presents analyses and data visualizations that are suitable for presentation to senior leaders and key stakeholder groups at both hospital and enterprise executive levels.

6. Identifies and implements improvements in analytics and data delivery to MGB staff by leveraging knowledge of business intelligence, data warehousing and healthcare analytics. Works closely with data engineers and business intelligence developers to create a cohesive and cross-functional team.

7. Leads all analyst-related aspects of the implementation of an ongoing project to roll out Tableau dashboards to staff at all levels of seniority in order to drive operational improvements for MGB as a whole.

8. Manages project dependencies and timelines while reporting status, issues and risks to appropriate audiences

9. Collaborates with other MGB departments, sites and affiliates as needed, on an ongoing basis

10. Works in a matrixed Agile/Scrum/Kanban environment. Partners with Product Owners and Scrum Masters as leaders of analytic development teams. May serve as a Product Owner for one or more domains.

Quality Responsibilities

Ensures comprehensive Quality Assurance as part of each deliverable

1. Ensures adequate documentation for internal team and external users

2. Ensures data integrity, quality, availability and consistency while providing consultation and support to data users and other key stakeholders across the organization. Proactively identifies data quality issues and risks as well as opportunities for enhancement.

3. Ensures adherence to data visualization standards for analysis, dashboards, and other insights that will be leveraged by senior leadership for decision-making, such that the data are simple, easy to interpret, actionable, and elegant.

Staff Supervision and Development

1. Manages, supervises the activities of, and mentors assigned staff within the department. Prioritizes assignments and identifies and helps to overcome barriers to ensure successful and timely completion of all work.

2. Works with new and existing EOI analysts to share knowledge in methods of data analysis, summarization and presentation. Trains other analysts and end-users on key analytic and reporting systems and databases

Working Conditions

  • Fast paced remote environment that requires teamwork, collaboration, and flexibility.
  • General day hours with flexibility to meet the demands of the position (e.g., some early morning or early evening meetings)
  • May require occasional travel on site for local staff.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Organizes activities of EOI team as well as other teams as needed for specific projects
  • Participates in performance reviews as assigned

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Participates in managing project budgets and is conscientious about departmental operating and capital budgets


1. Master’s degree in information systems, public health, business or a healthcare field preferred

2. 5 years of progressive experience focused on data and analytics across multiple domains and content areas in a healthcare organization, preferably in an academic medical center environment

3. Experience directly managing a team greatly preferred. Leadership experience without direct management (Project Manager, Team Lead, etc.) may be considered.

4. Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional teams and projects, preferably in an Agile environment.

5. Strong competency with SQL and Business Intelligence tools such as Tableau required

6. EHR data and analytics competency required, with Epic Clarity, Caboodle, and Cogito a substantial plus

7. Demonstrated ability to mentor staff, including across various analytical roles

8. Strong competency with MS Office products, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to effectively manage, train, and mentor staff of varying levels of experience.

2. Strong knowledge and experience with dashboarding, analytics, data warehousing and reporting projects and resources

3. Demonstrated understanding of and experience with business intelligence, data warehousing and data visualization concepts and strategies

4. Comprehensive understanding of hospital clinical, operational and financial data, metrics and KPIs.

5. Ability to plan, organize and manage projects, staff, resources and timelines, and to prioritize and delegate accordingly. Experience working within Agile, Scrum, or Kanban teams a plus. 4

6. Creative, self-motivated, possess good judgment and the ability to plan and initiate new and innovative activities.

7. Attention to detail that ensures follow through on all initiatives, projects undertaken.

8. Ability to effectively respond to time sensitive issues and meet deadlines.

9. Demonstrated ability to execute strategy and achieve goals

10. Strong leadership and mentoring skills

11. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to focus detailed concentrated efforts to multiple projects and re-establish priorities as necessary

12. Exceptional communication skills, including strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills required when working in a matrixed organization in order to partner with and influence others

13. Takes initiative and has ability to work independently, while thriving in a setting requiring collaboration and teamwork for maximal efficiency and effectiveness.

14. Ability to be flexible, versatile and adaptable in day-to-day activities conducted in a mostly remote work environment.
