GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
A position is open for a full time Laboratory Manager in the Immune Monitoring Laboratory in the MGH Cancer Center. We are looking for a highly motivated individual to support the development and sustainability of this service-orientated, clinically focused research laboratory The Lab Manager is responsible for the oversight of equipment and consumables and generates staff schedules according to sample workflow. Coordinating with the IML Director and laboratory staff, the Lab Manager is responsible for ensuring the day-to-day needs of the lab and its employees are met.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ability to function independently and strategize primarily with the Lab Director and Sr. Research Laboratory Manager.
- Makes independent decisions to effectively move the lab forward in the day-to-day operations
- Uses excellent judgment to interpret problems and issue solutions in real time
- Responsible for generating staff schedules according to estimated sample arrival while setting priorities for technical staff and their personal development as scientists.
- Coordinate with Clinical Research Coordinators at MGH and remote sites to ensure sample shipment runs smoothly and appropriate staffing is in place to process.
- Create and update training curriculum for upcoming staff members and use this tool to onboard staff in general procedures and protocols.
- Oversee and update inventory of consumables and antibodies. Receive, inspect and verify all lab purchases and deliveries.
- Take a lead role in overseeing installment of new equipment in the laboratory.
- Coordinate and perform preventative maintenance and calibration of equipment. Facilitate equipment service and repair.
- Responsible for ensuring SOPs are up to date, creating new SOPs where needed and management of the document control system Medialab.
- Oversee laboratory databases and documentation, making sure all are accurate and backed-up. Coordinate sample management and oversee sample storage and inventory system. Manage and administrate integrated systems and platforms including MediaLab, Slack, Monday etc.
- Assist with scheduling meetings and events and preparation of materials and provide meeting minutes.
- Support Laboratory Director with generation of invoices for clinical trial work performed.
- Basic wet lab tasks may include mammalian tissue culture, processing and banking patient blood samples and flow cytometry. Dependent on the candidate's ability and interest, there will be potential to further develop wet lab skills if desired.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Must be a process-driven and detail-oriented leader who will ensure day-to-day lab activity are smoothly conducted.
- Strong collaborative and communication skills a must.
- Has the ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks in a quick-paced lab environment.
- In conjunction with Director and Sr. Research Laboratory Manager, must be comfortable lightly supervising laboratory staff and be involved in the hiring and training of staff.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree is required
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years of hands-on work experience in a laboratory setting. Supervisory experience preferred
