Job Description
Physician Health Services, Inc. (PHS), is a nonprofit corporation that was founded by the Massachusetts Medical Society to address issues of physician health. PHS is a confidential resource for physicians and medical students who may benefit from help addressing stress, burnout, work-life balance issues, and a variety of other health concerns that sometimes arise in today's hectic healthcare environment. These include substance use difficulties, cognitive issues, behavioral health problems, medical conditions, stressful medicolegal situations, and interpersonal challenges at work or at home. PHS provides resources to those who seek our services, and provides assessments, referral, and monitoring for substance use disorders, behavioral health concerns, and occupational difficulties.
We are currently seeking a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (Clinical Coordinator) to work in our Waltham, MA office. This position is based on a hybrid in-office and remote schedule.
The Clinical Coordinator manages a caseload of PHS clients to promote and maintain their health and professional viability while supporting the safety of patients. The Clinical Coordinator works closely with PHS colleagues - The Medical and Executive Directors, physicians, clinical coordinators, General Counsel, administrative staff, outside resources, and leaders in his/her institution - to develop, implement, and monitor appropriate treatment plans. S(he) performs intake evaluations, meets with clients on a regular basis, and interfaces with various stakeholders invested in the well-being of the client. In addition, s(he) works with the PHS team both in/out of clinical rounds and participates in ongoing quality improvement work to optimize clinical and operational efficiencies.
Responsibilities:
1. Participates in intakes and assessments of physician and medical student clients.
2. Participates in PHS clinical rounds to present intake evaluations, consult with colleagues on complex and challenging cases, and discuss resources, additional assessments, and monitoring recommendations for clients.
3. Reviews internal and/or external client evaluations and- when indicated - explains the monitoring program to clients and other designated individuals (clinicians, chiefs of service, and work and peer monitors).
4. Performs ongoing consultation, liaison and informational activities with relevant external health care professionals, attorneys, medical leaders, regulatory bodies, and client monitors working with PHS monitoring and pre-monitoring clients. Maintains appropriate signed consents to facilitate communication in a manner that conforms to the specifics of the authorized consent.
5. Meets regularly with assigned clients, confirms client is compliant with contract/agreement provisions, provides solution-focused interventions, and responds accordingly when client status changes or deteriorates. Meetings with PHS clients will occur virtually, or in Waltham depending on the needs of the PHS program and clients.
6. Gains and maintains a full understanding of the PHS Substance Use Disorder, Behavioral Health, and Occupational Health monitoring programs, including the use of the client database and a variety of biomarker testing paradigms and protocols. In conjunction with others on the PHS team, responds quickly and appropriately to positive, late, and missed tests and other indications of noncompliance.
7. Provides appropriate support, education, and referrals to family members of PHS participants.
8. Attends regular PHS team meetings, Clinical Advisory Committee meetings, and other PHS sponsored meetings and events.
9. Participates in conference calls with the PHS professional staff, General Counsel, and other staff members, as necessary. Communicates proactively about updated case information regarding active clients at and between meetings. Consults with PHS physicians and other team members in developing actionable recommendations for participants with active and current concerns.
10. Documents all participant discussions and case-related communications through progress notes in our database, maintaining current, up-to-date information about each client.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* A master's or doctoral level degree in a clinical mental health discipline, a current Massachusetts licensure, and five or more years of related experience.
* Experience working with physicians and/or medical students in a health care or medical school environment is desirable.
* Experience and/or qualifications in the evaluation and remediation of individuals with substance use disorders, mental health disorders, unprofessional behavior, and other occupational health challenges is very desirable, as is the ability to work effectively and assertively with highly intelligent, strong-willed individuals who may be unaccustomed to the oversight and accountability of a formal monitoring program.
* The ability to evaluate, formulate, and triage to the appropriate level of care is important, as is the ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
* Experience collaborating with medical schools, a variety of health care organizations, and government agencies such as the Board of Registration in Medicine is desirable.
* Excellent communication, presentation and people skills are necessary.
