What are the responsibilities and job description for the Genetic Counselor position at Maternal Fetal Care?
GENERAL SUMMARY
Provide prenatal and preconception genetic counseling to high risk patients and family members for issues including advanced maternal age, abnormal serum screening, cell-free fetal DNA testing, sonographic abnormalities, family history of genetic syndromes and birth defects, and pregnancy exposures. The counselor is responsible for collecting family history, explaining the nature and scope of testing options, and following up with results and giving support and resources to patients.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Elicit an appropriate and inclusive family history and medical information, including pregnancy, developmental, and medical histories.
Convey genetic, medical, and technical information, including, but not limited to diagnosis, etiology, natural history, prognosis, and treatment/management of genetic conditions and /or birth defects to patients and their families.
Explain technical and medical aspects of diagnostic and screening methods and reproductive options, including associated risks, benefits, and limitations.
Assess and calculate genetic and teratogenic risks.
Identify and access appropriate local, regional, and national resources and services for families with genetic disorders.
Facilitate the identification of a course of action for patients and families, which seems to them appropriate, in view of their risks, family goals, and their ethical and religious standards.
Facilitate adjustment to the disorder in the patient or in an affected family member and/or the risk of recurrence of that disorder.
Maintain required continuing education credits as defined by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
Communicate with laboratories to obtain results of genetic testing.
Return patients phone calls in response to care and needs.
Document findings in patient chart and communicate to physicians involved in care of the patient.
Correspond in a timely manner with physicians and other health care professionals.
Coordinate patient care with providers as required.
Assist staff to develop client/family education with the focus on keeping them updated on tests, processes, and expectations.
Assist in facilitating efficient operation of center activities.
Work includes cross coverage in all center areas as team needs and according to ability
Participates in Performance Improvement activities as requested.
Assists in ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies for genetics laboratory send-outs

Adheres to organizational and department specific safety standards and guidelines.
Works collaboratively and supports efforts of team members.

QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling, Human Genetics or a related field from an ABGC accredited genetic counseling program or equivalent program.
Certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Certification must be obtained within 12 months of employment.
Ability to develop a clinically appropriate genetic counseling plan.
Ability to ensure that all recommended testing ordered is completed and that patients have been appropriately informed of the results.
Ability to present relevant genetic information to individuals and families from diverse cultural backgrounds in an informed, compassionate manner and to help families obtain the medical and social services they may need.
Ability to provide genetic, medical, and technical information in a comprehensive, understandable, nondirective manner to patients and families.
Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple activities
Knowledge of and ability to apply genetic counseling methods and techniques
Knowledge of genetic diseases and disorders, birth defects, risks/options, and prenatal diagnosis screening tools.
