Job Description


The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, visitors, volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 10,000 diverse professionals and knowledge experts

The DOC seeks to recruit Program Support Coordinators to support the Division of Programs and Community Partnerships. The selected candidates will assist with the management and operationalization of programs and services that reduce idleness and/or enhance individuals’ skills and/or prepare individuals for their transition to the community. Initially, the Program Support Coordinators will focus primarily on the distribution, collection, and optimal utilization of tablets for incarcerated persons in all NYCDOC facilities (Rikers Island and VCBC). Select facilities will have needs for evening/ weekend schedules. The Program Support Coordinators’ responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
  • Distribute tablets to individuals in custody (obtain and provide login information and user cards; offer onsite support to individuals in custody and monitor transfers in and out of units/ assigned facility);
  • Collect tablets from individuals in custody / find and retrieve if not properly returned;
  • Conduct inspections of tablets to ensure all devices are in a state of good repair;
  • Collaborate with facility staff to ensure adherence to tablet policy, including completion of daily sign-in sheets;
  • Ensure individuals in custody understand tablet policy;
  • Assist individuals in navigating tablet content and encourage them to engage with educational content such as courses, books, reentry resources and inspirational material.
  • Manage and maintain an up to date inventory of tablets, to include the coordination of deliveries of equipment, materials and supplies as needed;
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis (daily and weekly);
  • Collecting and tracking user information and entering information in a database, to include the maintenance of accurate records on the number of specialized licenses used;
  • Provide status updates as requested;
  • Collaborate with uniform staff, non-uniform staff and external partners;
  • Participate in meetings and as required;
  • Support people in custody towards reaching their individualized goals;
  • Develop and implement strategies to maximize program participation;
  • Assist program managers with day to day program operations;
  • Perform related duties and assist with special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qual Requirements


1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.


Preferred Skills


  • Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) proficiency;
  • Expertise in data entry and analysis;
  • Experience in a high-paced environment, with the ability to manage information and distribute appropriately;
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with multiple units and different levels of staff;
  • Excellent writing, communication, inter-personal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills;
  • Proficiency in managing, utilizing, and troubleshooting digital technology;
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, proactive resourceful and flexible;
  • Proven ability to communicate with staff (at all levels) in a fast-paced environment, work effectively on a team as well and independently as needed, meet deadlines, and perform all tasks with a high level of professionalism.

Residency Requirement


New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
