PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Child Nutrition Assistant Director of Finance & Nutrition is the financial steward of child nutrition activities. As such, they ensure that Child Nutrition is financially solvent, compliant and sustainable. Specifically, the Assistant Director achieves financial excellence at both the district-level and at every school cafeteria with an emphasis in menu cost and execution, counting and claiming, commodity processing, cost and inventory management and procurement. In addition, they lead the Community Eligibility Provision and verification effort
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Education, Accounting, Finance or related field, required
Master’s Degree in Nutrition, Education, Accounting, Finance or related field, preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of K-12 child nutrition programs and systems required
Strong fluency in spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel required
Strong fluency in Microsoft Office and computer applications, required
Analytical skills with ability to convert raw data into meaningful analysis and actionable recommendations required
Knowledge of fiscal controls, budget and financial management systems required
Ability to implement policy and procedures, required
Experience training large groups in school food service guidelines and procedures required
Strong written, oral and presentation skills required
Proficiency in English and Spanish, preferred
Experience:
Three (3) years in education, accounting, finance, nutrition compliance or similar role, required
Two (2) years directly managing others, required
Three (3) years in school food service management, preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Administer the child nutrition program finance and menu systems for the district by planning and establishing the organizational framework for achieving program goals and objectives and following the guidelines mandated by the Federal, State, and local governmental agencies to ensure the highest quality of services to students daily.
- Collaborate with Child Nutrition Director in developing and administering a system of budget and financial control for the child nutrition department.
- Develop department budget, budget trackers, and monitor revenues and expenditures to meet pre-set targets and communicate course corrections in a timely manner.
- Provide recommendations to the Director of Child Nutrition on implementation of financial controls and procurement planning for capital expenditures to generate fund balance year after year to maintain 3 months operating expenses and plan for capital improvements to improve child nutrition program.
- Develop Finance and procurement and menu plans, policies, procedures to achieve program goals, priorities, and initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Director of Child Nutrition, Child Nutrition Coordinator, and Menu & Production Nutrition Specialist to create a delicious, appealing menu that increases participation in every grade year over year.
- Develop standards, operating procedures and training for school cafeteria staff regarding menu production and food quality, special diets, implementation and progress toward goal of budget, counting and claiming, and orders/receiving of food and non-food.
- Assist the Director of Child Nutrition in compiling the necessary data for reporting as required by the Deputy Superintendent for District Operations, Chief Financial Officer and the Superintendent of Schools.
- Collaborate with the Director of Child Nutrition on procurement planning to include thresholds, procurement needs, grant opportunities, and capital expenditure planning.
- Develop a culture of commitment, collaboration, and communication amongst food service staff that increases food service staff satisfaction and eliminates the escalation of personnel issues.
- Collaborate with direct reports, the Director of Child Nutrition, and human resources as needed to resolve personnel issues at the campus level and with direct reports.
- Develop robust food service staff training plans to execute the menu with excellence every day.
- Develop processes to ensure compliant state and Federal agency requirements are met to include claim consolidation, inventory management, financial reporting, meal reporting and analysis, and Community Eligibility Provision.
- Collaborate with Child Nutrition Director, Coordinator, and Child Nutrition Specialists to develop and execute effective professional development for teachers and other school staff on the benefits of child nutrition, counting and claiming, compliance, and other trainings as needed.
- Complete performance reviews of direct reports and provide input to Operations Coordinator for campus performance reviews as needed.
- Maintain relevant and appropriate documentation regarding all school food service concerns for audit purposes to verify accountability to the district, TDA, USDA and any other regulatory agencies.
- Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
- Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).

Minimum: $334.05
Maximum: $461.31
Note: Starting pay for a new hire in a pay range plan will be determined individually based on each person's job-related experience and salaries paid to peer employees in the same position with similar experience.
