Job Description

The Monterey Herald, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking a multi-talented individual to join our staff. This position will plan, edit and page check the Herald 2 to 5 days a week, and will report and/or photograph 3 to 5 days a week depending on news and scheduling needs. Primary focus for the beat includes local government, growth and development, and law enforcement. We're looking for journalists with the ability to produce strong enterprise and breaking news for digital and print platforms. Our ideal candidates can cultivate sources in person and via social media, write compelling narratives.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Help guide staff reporters on daily assignments, pick wire stories, upload and edit freelance stories, edit local copy, write teasers, check pages.
  • Cover general assignment stories as determined in consultation with the managing editor.

A little bit about you:

  • You have journalism experience, AP style knowledge and the ability to quickly compile accurate reporting on a variety of topics.
  • Experience working with various technologies for the position including PC laptops and digital cameras and recording equipment.
  • You’re well versed on current events and issues, especially those of Monterey County.
  • Good people skills are necessary for conducting interviews with sources and managing other reporters.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required

This is a fully remote role - must live in or near Monterey County and able to report on events in the area.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
