What You Will Be Doing : As part of the Department of Administration, Office of Information Technology, Operations Network / Telecommunication Team, this position is part of a statewide effort that supports the State of Alaska voice, video, data center, demilitarized zone (DMZ) and networking infrastructure across the State of Alaska.

This position will help plan, implement, and maintain complex converged telecommunications voice / data networks, troubleshoot network and security issues.

Build on your Cisco skills and participate in the planning, building, and maintenance of the State of Alaska's networks. Your role will provide and maintain the health and security of the network, research and evaluate new technologies as they pertain to the needs of the State of Alaska, and plan for implementation of services that improve these telecommunications for the State of Alaska.

The Network Engineer / Data Communication Specialist 1 / 2 position plays a vital role in ensuring the success of Telecommunication / Network services to provide the services to the State of Alaska.

The Working Environment You Can Expect : Daily work consists of planning, implement, and maintain complex converged telecommunications and central site build-outs of data, voice and video networks.

On occasion those project hours take longer than a standard workweek and we offer a flextime plan as a secondary leave resource for use according to the bargaining unit contract outline.

OIT also offers a hybrid telework-friendly environment.

Who We Are Looking For : The person we are looking for to fill this position will encapsulate the following desired competencies to contribute to the success of the Network / Telecommunication Team :

Experience with Firewalls, Cisco IOS, IOS XE and NX-OS operating systemsDesire & Aptitude to learn new skillsManage multiple technical projects while in a cross-functional team environment.

Employment with the Office of Information Technology is contingent upon successfully completing and maintaining an Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) background check and security clearance conducted by the Department of Public Safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Data Communications Specialist 1Four years of data processing, communication, and / or network experience performing any combination of equipment operation, installation, and repair;
  • end-user support, diagnosis, and resolution; network planning, design, modification, implementation, security, and administration;

and / or communications programming using Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) and routing protocols, such as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Enhanced Interior Gateway Protocol (EIGRP), or similar.

Two years of this experience must have been performed at the full-proficiency, professional level.

Substitution : Specific certifications such as Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional Program (CCNP), Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE), Certified Novel Engineer (CNE), Microsoft Certified Systems Designer (MCSE), Integrated Communication Systems (ICS), Linux Professional Institute (LPI), Accredited Systems Engineer (ASE), Registered Communications Distribution Engineer (RCDD) or Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) may substitute for two years of this experience.

Post-secondary education from an accredited college in any combination of the fields of electrical engineering, electronics technology, computer science, and / or communications engineering may be used as an equivalent for up to four years of the required experience (2.
