General Summary of Position

MedStar Pharmacies, Inc. has an immediate opportunity for a Pharmacist In Charge to join our retail/outpatient team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Standard hours will be M - F 8 am -6 pm and 8 am -4:30 pm weekend rotations.

Responsible for evaluating drugs prescribed by physicians for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interaction, and contraindications; processes prescriptions through insurance company and handles DUR rejects, pre-authorizations, etc.; performs final check on all prescriptions, ensuring accurate input, labeling, and dispensing; and provides counseling and drug information to patients and physicians. Assumes full legal responsibility for the operation of the relevant pharmacy, including meeting all inspections and other requirements of the state and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing pharmacy operations.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Assumes full legal responsibility for the entire operation of the pharmacy in a manner that legally complies with all the applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Assumes full responsibility for all CDS inventory.
  • Complies with all loss prevention and security procedures for inventory as well as for the pharmacy itself.
  • Maintains all records of all transactions of the pharmacy necessary to ensure accurate control over and accountability for all drugs as required by applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  • Oversees monthly, yearly and biennial inventories of control substances and is responsible for reporting any discrepancies.
  • Performs initial investigation of any identified discrepancies of CDS.
  • Assures all personnel are properly registered and licensed with the Board of Pharmacy.
  • Ensures that patient counseling is provided by a pharmacist, as appropriate, on a patient-by-patient basis.
  • Performs final check on all completed prescriptions, verifying the accuracy of input, labeling, and dispensing; makes corrections as necessary, maintains refills and narcotic logs, and prescription files.
  • Processes prescriptions in the dispensing system; evaluates prescriptions for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interactions, and contraindications.
  • Provides clinical information and guidance to physicians and allied health professionals as appropriate to provide safe, prompt, and accurate dispensing of all prescriptions; calls physicians and follows up on refill requests; notifies physicians of Rx's requiring pre-authorizations, and discusses alternatives as appropriate.

    Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy required or
    • Pharm D. required

    Experience

    • 5-7 years Pharmacy experience in a retail setting. required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Current Maryland or DC Pharmacist license, including Immunization required or
    • Vaccination Certification and registration with the board of pharmacy in that state or district. required and
    • Current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) license from American Red Cross or America Heart Association (AHA). required

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong customer service skills, and basic computer skills required.
    • Must be highly productive; organized; and comfortable engaging with patients, family members, and healthcare providers.
    • Adept at building trust and relationships.
