In this exciting Principal Engineer role, you will be a member of the Research and Technology (R&T) team in the Neurovascular business, where you will conceptualize, develop, and de-risk strategic Phase 0 projects. These early phase programs are often complex due to their high level of ambiguity and associated risks but are critical for supporting strategic business decisions and improving lives. Your contribution in this role will focus primarily on identifying high-potential opportunities in key markets and developing innovative neurovascular technological solutions.
The Research & Technology team’s mandate is to identify, enable, de-risk, and build technologies or solutions that align with the Neurovascular business strategic objectives and significantly improve patient health.

A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Identify key business opportunities and clearly define the customer needs and problem statement
- Guide the conceptualization of new technologies, methods, materials, machines, processes, or products
- Guide small cross-functional team to demonstrate feasibility and utility of potential solutions
- Create and validate project assumptions necessary to understand the risk and cost of new development projects
- Formulate strategic recommendations to business leadership regarding funding decisions for new development projects
- Partner closely with marketing and business development to create and validate the business case of each opportunity
- Oversee the investigation and evaluation of new and existing technologies
- Direct the development of new concepts from initial design to funded PDP kick-off
- Manage feasibility studies (bench and pre-clinical) of potential solutions to determine if they are capable of meeting essential performance requirements
- Coordinate the activities of outside suppliers, vendors, and consultants to meet unique project needs unable to be filled by Medtronic resources
- Responsible for multiple programs simultaneously
- Bachelors degree required
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience
Nice to Have
- Bachelor’s degree required in Mechanical, Materials, or Biomedical Engineering
- Medical device development experience
- Exceptional problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of statistical methods
- Work well with others (collaborative)
- Self-starter and driver – able to execute effectively
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Flexible and adaptable, comfortable working in a dynamic environment
- Experience in the endovascular and/or peripheral vascular markets, particularly in acute ischemic stroke (AIS), hemorrhagic stroke, or other brain therapies space
- Experience working on or leading cross-functional teams
- Experience in new product development for medical devices
- Successful track record of critical thinking (problem identification/solving) and innovation
- In-depth knowledge of endovascular procedures and technologies
- In-depth knowledge of medical device regulations
- Ability to create structure and processes where none exists
- Ability to formulate credible technical and business recommendations
- Eager to learn (technology, pre-clinical, clinical, competitive landscape, etc.)
- Understanding of basic business acumen
