What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lab-Laboratory Manager-FT/DAYS position at Mee Memorial Healthcare System?
JOB SUMMARY: Supervises, coordinates, and participates in activities of personnel performing various chemical, microscopic and bacteriological tests of body fluids, exudates, skin scraping and surgical specimens to obtain diagnosis and treatment of disease. He/she will individualize patient care based upon the age appropriate and developmental needs. Should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit. Performs other duties as assigned.
PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS
Essential Function
1. Directs operations concerning specimen handling, diagnostic testing and results reporting.
a. Specimens are processed in accordance with laboratory procedures.
b. Physician response and feedback to proceeding is consistently acceptable.
c. Identifies techniques and procedures consistent with current and future practice methods of Medical Staff; maintains close working relationship with key physicians (i.e. orthopedists, primary care, and emergency room).
2. Maintains competence levels of staff.
a. Competency requirements are accurately described and criteria standards established for all staff job descriptions.
b. Staff attends outside continuing education courses each year.
c. Documentation of attendance at all in-service activities is always maintained.
d. Demonstrates role model attributes and the professional image required to develop the skills and knowledge of others.
3. Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
a. Reviews and makes recommendations concerning the monitoring of potential safety hazards.
b. Identifies safety hazards and always takes appropriate corrective action.
c. Follows policies outlining standards of hygiene and general safety rules
d. May originate studies in the following areas:
• Infection control;
• Equipment safety;
• Appropriate documentation of patient care;
• Appropriateness of physician orders/referrals; and
• Interactions with other departments.
4. Participates in the Performance Improvement Plan for the Laboratory Department.
a. Quality control standards are consistently maintained for each Laboratory division.
b. Quality control is regularly reviewed by comparison with other facilities and peers.
c. Develops and utilizes a defined system of resolving identified problems.
d. Provides follow up monitoring to assure problem resolution.
e. Reports problems and activities to appropriate Hospital review group.
5. Recommends equipment modification and essential construction in the department.
a. Researches capital budget requirements; thoroughly prepares and provides justification for capital budget requests.
6. Directs the maintenance of department records and statistics.
a. Monitors the preparation, posting and completion of all records, logs and statistics.
b. Completes quality control records accurately and within prescribed time requirements.
7. Demonstrates and explains difficult and/or new techniques, tests and procedures.
a. Shows initiative in demonstrating new methods, tests and/or equipment.
b. Regularly provides individual and small group in-service to assist in the learning process.
8. Calibrates and checks laboratory instruments.
a. Regularly inspects instruments and makes sure that equipment is in proper working order.
9. Coordinates department purchasing and is responsible for stock levels, reagents and supplies.
a. Determines the types and amounts of supplies and reagents required to meet needs of the department.
b. Equipment, supplies and materials are always stored in accordance with business and safety standards.
c. Supply levels are consistently maintained without overstocking.
10. Performs simple maintenance and adjustment of equipment.
a. Performs required maintenance procedures as required for various laboratory equipment.
b. Develops contingency plan for equipment malfunction.
11. Prepares the department procedure and policy manual.
a. Manuals are consistently updated and reflect complete procedures for the department.
b. Drafts procedural language for updates and reviews with Pathologist or Laboratory Director.
