Overview

The Formulation Manager has broad responsibilities for production compounding associates and the activities that are expected to result in the output of the products and services that meet internal and external customer expectations for quality, delivery, cost, cGMP, and safety perspective. These activities must be accomplished in a manner that protects the health and safety of all associates and is in full compliance of all regulatory policies and procedures. Further, the position is expected to fully support vision and strategy for continuous improvement by helping to create an environment that embraces change. This Manager must provide the leadership needed to implement and execute change.

Responsibilities

• Works with Quality Production Supervisor and master scheduler to review production schedule and prepares a daily schedule based on formulation needs for that day and assigns work to formulators to fulfill the plan.
• Oversees the weigh out and the blending of ingredients in order to manufacture various products.
• Ensures that all products are formulated by strictly adhering to all process instructions to ensure consistent quality in each batch.
• Direct supervisory responsibilities for the compounding of topical OTC drugs, personal care and cosmetic formulations, in accordance with cGMP requirements, business procedures, and forecasted demand.
• Ensures that all GMP’s, OSHA, wastewater, and FDA regulations are being followed.
• Oversees the proper, storage, rotation, and validity of raw material inventory.
• Oversees proper disposal of unusable or obsolete product and ingredients. Ensures that this is done in accordance with all Federal, State, Local and Permit Mandates.
• Trouble shoots any problems arising with product formulations.
• Coordinates all ongoing formulation, safety, SOP, and GMP training.
• Oversee the waster testing to ensure that we comply with all local utility regulations.
• Oversee and review Tier Two report and ensures that it is sent to required government locations by March 1st of each year.
• Oversee and review the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms report and ensures that it is mailed out to the required government agency by July 15th of each year.
• Reviews MSDS sheets to ensure proper storage and safe handling of all ingredients.
• Oversees the proper sanitation of all kettles, holding tanks, pipes, buckets, pumps, and machine parts, which come in contact with ingredients or products.
• Ensures that flammable corrosive and oxidizing ingredients are handled within department guidelines.
• Ensures proper maintenance of R.O. system through daily system checks, filter changes, system monitoring, etc.
• Writes, maintains, and ensures compliance with all department SOP’s.
• Participates in product transfers and scale up from R&D
• Involved with all regulatory audits conducted by FDA or other external auditors.

Qualifications

• BS/BA in Chemistry (or related field) or equivalent experience
• Minimum 2-5 years of experience in with compounding, formulating or developing consumer products such as personal care, skin care and home care products. Preferred experience with Over the Counter (OTC) drug product manufacturing.
• Experience in record keeping and document organization in a setting where controlled documents in a cGMP/regulatory environment were used is a
• Experience and understanding of cGMP, safety, and environmental policies, procedures, and requirements.
• Laboratory skills related to formulation and troubleshooting of OTC drug products, personal care and skin care products.
• Experience with quality systems.
• Thorough knowledge of FDA regulations, cGMP’s and safety practices applicable to manufacturing a variety of consumer products and OTC drug products.
• Familiarity with JDE and Quality Management Systems such as Master Control preferred.
• Competence with basic computer applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access.
• Formulation/Packaging or Quality Assurance experience helpful.
