INTRODUCTION
Located at Ft. Meade, Maryland, the core working hours are 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The hourly wage is $30.03 and is a non-exempt position-a valid driver's license (driving records check is required). Pre-employment background checks and drug testing is required.
The Carpenter I performs the carpentry duties necessary to maintain in good repair building woodwork and equipment such as bins, cribs, counters, benches, partitions, and doors. Work involves most of the following: planning and laying out of work from blueprints, drawings, models, or verbal instructions; using a variety of carpenter's hand tools, portable power tools, and standard measuring instruments; and making common shop computations relating to dimensions of work; and selecting materials necessary for the position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Must possess knowledge of commercial construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety.
- Proficient at the following tasks: stain-grade trim work, hanging doors, drilling and setting door hardware, fixing windows, layout for stairs and common rafters, reading blueprints, and utilizing appropriate math skills.
- Able to read blueprints and possess the mathematical and analytical skills necessary to estimate material.
- Removes walls, installs partitions and steps; alters buildings or rooms; or adds to existing structures using hand and power tools.
- Installs and finishes drywall, wood paneling, siding, and other prefabricated materials.
- Maintains and repairs the carpentry trade's hand or power tools and equipment by cleaning, oiling, setting, welding, or other processes.
- Marks, cuts, and shapes materials to prescribed measurements; assemble by fastening with nails, staples, dowels, or glue. Installs wood, ceramic, resilient, or cement floors; installs glass, ceiling tile, windows, and doors.
- Fits, installs, and maintains finished hardware such as locks and kick plates.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Effectively use a variety of hand and power tools; review and identify projects needed to be serviced by outside contractors; follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate effectively in both oral and written form; maintain work logs.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted during work assignments.
- The incumbent must be able to stand 80% of the work time and sit 20%, must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs. and push/pull 50 lbs.
- These requirements are necessary to complete contract work, inspect work areas and use and operate contract equipment. Candidates must be able to climb, stoop, kneel, and reach.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and five or more years of experience in Carpentry, installing, troubleshooting, and repairing all aspects of various types of general tasks required.
- Knowledge of preferred GSA containers and the ability to complete other assigned general maintenance work requests.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions, diagrams, and manufacturer's manuals.
- Must have a valid driver's license and be able to meet government background check requirements.
