As the Flatbed Safety Inspector, you will conduct and assist Flatbed Orientation Instructor in training new and existing drivers how to properly secure and tarp open deck cargo in accordance with Dept. of Transportation regulations. Inspectors ensure commercial motor vehicles ensure all equipment is in satisfactory condition at all times, according to the standards set by the Department of Transportation.


Essential Job Functions:

  1. Perform comprehensive inspections of trucks, checking for compliance with state and federal safety regulations.
  2. Become proficient in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations to effectively train for Safety and Securement of Open Deck Cargo.
  3. Able to relay information and communicate, in the training process, to prepare contractors to be able to secure cargo safely, effectively, and in accordance with all federal regulations.
  4. Perform comprehensive inspections of trucks and trailers, check for compliance with state and federal safety regulations.
  5. Identify and document any mechanical issues, safety concerns, or violations.
  6. Utilize inspection checklists and diagnostic equipment to assess the condition of brakes, tires, lights, steering components, suspension, and other critical components.
  7. Report any maintenance or repairs needed to the vehicle owner.
  8. Communicate with operations to ensure the vehicle is placed out of service or back in service when repairs have been completed.
  9. Stay up to date with changing regulations and industry standards related to truck safety and inspection procedures.
  10. Receives copies of DOT inspections, audits them, signs a copy of certifications of repairs, and sends them back to the state and provides copies to the log department.
  11. Collaborates with colleagues and communicates effectively with contractors regarding inspection results and options of repair facilities in the area.
  12. Performs data entry for files and inspections.


Essential Skills and Experience:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training or certification in automotive or heavy-duty truck inspection is a plus.
  2. Remains current on truck maintenance, DOT safety regulations, systems, and procedures.
  1. Must have a valid driver’s or CDL license and be able to operate trucks and trailer operations and similar equipment.
  2. Familiarity with inspection tools and diagnostic equipment.
  3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications for report generation and documentation


Essential Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  1. Sufficient strength to lift and/or carry up to fifty (50) pounds on an infrequent basis a minimum of thirty (30) yards.
  2. Sufficient physical mobility and manual dexterity to successfully perform the duties of the job.
  3. Sufficient physical ability to perform duties adjacent to mobile or stationary commercial vehicle equipment, and/or commercial vehicles and on concrete, blacktop or other surfaces that become slippery from oil, grease, engine coolant, and other products associated with the transportation industry.
  4. Tolerance to daily exposure to varying weather and temperature extremes and tolerate commercial vehicle emissions, fumes and vapors, oil, grease, engine coolant and other products associated with the transportation industry.
  5. Ability to bend, stoop and utilize a mechanic's "creeper" to maneuver under vehicles to visually inspect commercial vehicle mechanical components.
  6. Ability to climb into trucks and trailers to check proper cargo binding and on to the top of transport tanks to check compliance with hazardous materials regulations.
  7. Ability to distinguish between shading of color variations to detect counterfeit inspection certificates and/or related documents.
  8. Hearing capability to detect air leaks and other issues during inspection.
