What are the responsibilities and job description for the Workplace Operations - New York position at Mercury?
Mercury is building a bank for startups. This turns out to be a pretty wild endeavor, so we’re looking to bring someone smart onto our operations team to help us out.
You’ll take the lead on remote workplace ops, put in place smooth business processes, engineer a strong hybrid culture, and make sure every team member feels comfortable adding to our group dynamic.
Across locations:
- Work with our operations team to set up and scale company processes such as onboarding, training, account provisioning and employee recognition.
- Plan company wide events, virtual, and in-person, that people really like—past events include ski trips, a visit to a video art installation, and a holiday play performed over Zoom.
In our New York office:
- Lead inaugural office opening in New York including sourcing furniture and decor, finding, and vetting vendors, and managing small renovation projects.
- Manage and keep inventory of all office equipment.
- Work with vendors like office cleaners and the landlord to create and maintain a neat workspace.
- Make a friendly first impression on office visitors and (no pressure) act as the living embodiment of our cultural values.
- Maintain a well-stocked kitchen, and make an effort to ensure everyone’s nutritional needs are met by office food and drink.
- Order lunch and sometimes dinner for the team.
- Make restaurant reservations and recommendations for the team.
- Make sure the office is clean, things stay in their proper places, and keep interior design looking sharp.
- Coordinate office visits and meetings for employees traveling in from afar.
- Plan and host in-office events for external business partners and investors.
Because we’re growing quickly, some experience in a similar role would probably be helpful, but don’t let lack of experience stop you from applying if you’re a quick study. You should also:
- Have a BA/BS or a background you feel is equivalent.
- Identify as having good people skills.
- Enjoy optimizing processes and thinking about how to automate your job.
- Have a strong preference for working with great tools, and be comfortable working with or learning the tools we use (Mercury, Gusto, 1Password, Notion, Slack, Google Docs, etc.).
- Have a system for staying organized and a good head for numbers.
- Have diverse interests and enjoy learning about other people’s interests.
- Have deliberate opinions on matters of aesthetics.
- Enjoy keeping up with the New York food scene.
- Prefer quality items, but be able to recognize extravagance.
- Listen with patience, attention, and empathy.
- Have a sense of humor (doesn’t have to be a good one).
