This position supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by providing safe and effective patient care by performing tasks and support functions under the supervision of a Licensed Nurse. The Patient Care Technician/Registrar may fulfill an expanded role by performing additional tasks and responsibilities as delegated by their department.
Job Duties
Maintains maintenance logs on vehicles as instructed by the department manager.
Safely drives a hospital owned vehicle to and from Mercy facilities.
Ensures specimen integrity through the use of designated specimen tracking equipment when made available.
Projects competent and caring attitude to clients. Represents the hospital and department in a positive manner. Maintain confidentiality of patients, specimens and records. Inventory and deliver supplies to clients' offices as requested.
Works with volunteers and assists them when needed.
Maintains departmental functions when systems are not operating.
Maintains patient record by editing and completing other functions.
Ensures registration is complete, and if not able to complete, initiates the necessary follow up.
Practices cost containment efforts on a shift to shift basis by efficient use of time and resources, i.e., man-hours, patient charges, equipment, supplies, etc.
Attends departmental/hospital meetings, activities or special projects per departmental guidelines.
Performs department specific duties as outlined on the department specific developmental checklist.
Ability to prioritize tasks, identify needs for changes in priorities and takes the initiative to recommend and implement changes in concert with their supervisor.
Assists in identifying quality improvement opportunities and demonstrate support for changes in practice designed to improve performance
Maintains cleanliness and organization of patient rooms and department work areas
Organizes and prioritizes daily work, taking into account the needs of patients, families and other health care workers
Demonstrates support for changes in practice designed to improve performance.
Responds within scope of practice to emergencies and life threatening conditions
Assures patient privacy by knocking on doors, closing curtains and protecting patient information
Maintains accurate and real time documentation of patient care provided
Demonstrates effective and age appropriate communication as well as the ability to understand the needs of the patient including non-verbal communication, fears, anxieties and language/cultural barriers
Observes and communicates to the licensed nurse any changes in patient condition and pertinent information regarding the needs of the patient and/or significant others
Provides safe and effective patient care under the supervision of the licensed nurse by performing tasks and support functions as delegated by department
Ensures that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome

Professional Experience
Previous Patient Care Tech or Certified Nursing Assistant experience preferred.
Education
High School diploma or equivalent preferred
In addition, ONE of the following is preferred:
completed a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) or Health Support Professional program
a minimum of 2 years in a baccalaureate program
first year student in an ADN program
comparable education, training, and experience as a CNA or EMT in the absence of successful completion of a CNA or Health Support Professional program
Licensure, Certification, Registration
Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
Valid Drivers License required.
Must meet insurability requirements for purposes of utilizing Mercy vehicles - must be at least age 18 required.
Must provide and maintain a good driving record, documented at hire, by a copy of a Motor Vehicle record.
Physical Demand Requirements
Heavy: Must be able to lift up to 15# to waist and shoulder height on frequent basis.
Able to lift up to 50# on occasional basis for assist with patient transfers.
Rare lifting of up to 100# for controlled falls.
Able to lift 15# overhead on occasional basis.
Able to push and pull of up to 20# of horizontal force on frequent basis, up to 35# of horizontal force on occasional basis and up to 50# of horizontal force on rare basis.
