Job Title Art Director, Food & Wine Job Description I. Job Summary Food & Wine magazine is seeking a dynamic, imaginative Art Director to join our award-winning creative team. The Art Director will work directly with the Creative Director and Photo Director and be instrumental in planning and designing department and feature pages; producing photo shoots; commissioning original artwork; and developing strong Food & Wine branding across multiple platforms, including digital, social, PR, and licensing projects. This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented designer to support and evolve the visual direction of a growing magazine through collaboration on evocative designs, inventive typography, creative photography, and conceptual ideas. This position can be based in Birmingham, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, or Des Moines. II. Essential Job Functions 75% Work with the Creative Director to design innovative layouts for department and feature pages Anticipate problems and proactively communicate with coworkers to make sure all elements of design are in place and align with story concept Take direction and adapt feedback to improve layouts/design Stay up-to-date on design and typography trends; find and/or design fonts as needed Experiment in design strategies and push quality of design forward daily Assign and direct illustrations Find and maintain a database of illustrators 20% Close daily collaboration with photo, food, and production teams, as well as editors in multiple locations Plan, design, and build rough layouts of magazine department sections and features Contribute to and collaborate on photo plans as needed 5% Assist in managing the day-to-day operations of a small, fast-paced art department with a sharp eye for detail and a strict attention to deadlines III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered. Education: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in graphic design or related field, or equivalent training and/or experience. Experience: Four (4) or more years of graphic design and photography direction experience in a creative, fast-paced media environment (such as a magazine or publishing job or internship). Experience in food media a plus.
