What are the responsibilities and job description for the Industrial Steel Loader position at Merrill Steel?
Position Summary
The Loaders at Merrill Steel transport large heavy steel pieces such as columns, trusses and I-beams onto flatbed trailers for the OTR Drivers using overhead cranes within the building. It is crucial that the Loaders understand weight distribution and have the ability to pre-plan how loads of steel pieces will fit onto trailers safely so that they will be securely transported across the country. Loaders are climbing on and off the trailers while guiding the steel with overhead cranes, so having a natural sense of safety and agility is required.
Technical Skills
- Mechanically inclined
- Able to operate grinders for around 15 hours/week
- Experienced in power tools and forklifts (preferred)
- Able to read a tape measure
Quality / Safety Skills
- Have acute situational awareness
- Able to be trained on and operate overhead cranes
- Equipped with personal protection equipment (PPE)
- Able to lift up to 80 pounds
