Job Summary
The Assistant Director assists the Director in providing direction and oversight to the Tribe’s Division of
Resource Management and Protection (DRMP).
The Mescalero Apache Reservation is located in the sky-islands of south-central New Mexico, with elevations
ranging from 5,400 feet and rising to 12,003 feet at the peak of Sierra Blanca. Total land area of the
reservation is approximately 460,678 acres and spans seven community types, including Chihuahuan desert,
grassland/oak woodland, piñon-juniper, Ponderosa pine, mixed conifer, spruce-fir and alpine community
types. This broad range of community types provides habitat for a diversity of wildlife species, which also
supports a big-game hunting program through the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino. The Tribe
also operates a Ranching Enterprise, raising grass-fed beef. There are many varied recreational opportunities
offered within the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico.

Duties and Responsibilities
Assists with maintaining essential public, departmental and DRMP staff relations, communication, and
coordination to provide counsel to the Director in maintaining daily operations of the Division of
Resource Management and Protection (DRMP).
Plans, organizes, and coordinates through professional, technical and administrative staff, the day-to-
day activities of DRMP by ensuring that staff are working within their established scopes of work,
approved budgets and project timelines. Will coordinate with supervisory staff to ensure that field
crews always have the necessary supplies to complete their scope of work.
Reviews actions taken and recommendations submitted by immediate subordinates to assure
compliance with technical, managerial and administrative requirements for funding sources. Evaluates
overall performance of these subordinates, and takes or recommends appropriate actions.
Exercises financial management responsibility to process DRMP funding/budget requests, monitor
expenditures, and reallocate (or recommend reallocation) funds based upon shifting program needs.
Provides input to the Director and Section Heads in the development of project specific funding/grant
proposals that will complement overall program and Tribal natural resource objectives, as well as
maintain year-round staff employment.
Assists in monitoring the BIA Self-Determination Contracts (Public Law 93-638) and other grants and
assistance agreements relating to DRMP operations to ensure the Tribe is in compliance with technical,
budgetary and reporting aspects as required by funding source.
Working with DRMP Supervisory staff, collects quarterly and annual narrative progress reports and
forwards to the Tribal Accounting Department. Staff of the Tribal Accounting Department will prepare

the Financial Status Reports and submit both the narrative and financial reports to the appropriate
funding agencies.
Enforces internal program policies and standards to strengthen program deficiencies, provide for
effective, efficient and economical operations, and to evaluate all activities to ensure fulfillment of
program objectives.
Participates in Tribal budgetary hearings and provides presentations to Tribal leadership regarding
financial status of program projects.
Provide presentations, as requested by Tribal leadership, relating to the budgetary status of program
work. Presentations will involve preparation of PowerPoint presentations, as well as associated
handout materials and reports.
Attends seminars, conferences, workshops, courses and other training required to maintain applicable
knowledge, skills and abilities.
Ensures that all safety and compliance requirements are met.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in natural or cultural resources field is required.
Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience involving project supervision, strategic planning,
budgetary management, and/or grant writing.
Must be proficient in computer usage necessary to prepare reports, oversee proper management of
program databases and spreadsheets, and make professional quality written and visual presentations
to Tribal leadership and other target audiences.
Must be able to effectively communicate in written and oral formats, and specifically utilize skills to
oversee/administer Departmental funding and facilitate meetings.
Knowledge of complex Tribal operational concerns is preferred.
Must be able to work in an interdisciplinary team environment, with professional, technical and
administrative staff interacting closely.
Must possess valid State driver’s license and meet Tribal insurance standards, since Assistant Director
will be required to travel independently to various project areas to monitor project and crew
accomplishment, as well as attend meetings and training sessions.
Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.
Selection will comply with “Tribal Preference Hiring” Ordinance 06-02.
Tribal preference and Native American Indian preference shall apply to all positions.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands and fingers to
handle, or feel; and talk and hear. The employee occasionally is required to stand; walk; and reach with hands
and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment
Work is generally performed in an office or indoor setting with a moderate noise level. Evening, weekend, and/or
holiday may be required.
Salary : $54,400 - $68,900
