Job Summary
Cultural Education Assistant will assist the Cultural Educator/Historian in the development of educational
materials and curricula focused on Apache culture and the Mescalero Apache Tribe’s past and present history.
This position will also aid in presentation activities at local schools, clerical and administrative tasks to support
daily office operations including sorting mail and entering it into a database, greeting visitors, taking messages
answering phone calls and other duties as assigned.

may be found or assigned to this position.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist Historian/Cultural Educator in presenting cultural and historical materials to school children
Must have knowledge of Apache traditions/cultural practices
Assist in the development of educational materials and curricula focused on Apache culture and past and
present history, and ensuring they are appropriate for various age groups
Effectively communicate in oral and written form to inform public of Tribal culture and history
Required to be self-motivated and able to work unsupervised
Essential basic computer skills (Microsoft office)
Collaboration with Mescalero Tribal organizations as well as local schools to teach children and community
about Mescalero Tribal history
Overseeing clerical tasks, such as checking mail and entering into office database
Keep inventory of office supplies and ordering new materials as needed
Maintaining files
Answering phone calls
Taking and delivering messages
Assist with field duties, if needed
Minimum Qualifications:
Must have High School Diploma or GED
Must have knowledge of Apache History and Culture.
Must have effective communication skills both written and verbal.
Must have basic computer skills.
Must be able to travel to the local schools and to trainings.
Must have valid Driver’s License.
Must have reliable transportation.
Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

Knowledge of the Apache History and Culture.
Knowledge of Historic Preservation.
Knowledge/experience in maintaining and organizing records.
Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically
Word, Excel and presentation software (such as PowerPoint)
Skill to effectively speak and to write clearly

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of job, employee is required to sit, stand, and walk for several hours at a time; to
use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms above shoulder level. The employee must
occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office setting, but local travel and working with the community and local
schools will also be required. Occasional evening, weekend, and/or holiday may be required. Training and
workshops may be attended by employee. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
Indian Preference:
Indian and Tribal Preference will apply, as per policy. (Must submit tribal documentation with application to qualify for Indian
Preference).
