Principal Electrical Engineer

Purpose of Position:

This position acts as the Chief Engineer for Electrical Engineering in Project Engineering and Execution for Messer in the Americas.

This position in the Project Engineering and Execution Organization will be responsible for all facets of ASU/CO2 and HYCO project execution as it relates to Electrical systems. This includes engineering, specification, selection, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting including detailed design.

The position sets strategy and standards for electrical engineering during capital project development and implementation (from solution development though implementation and hand over to operations). This position works closely with the Operations organization to ensure optimized selection and maximum competitiveness.

Principal Responsibilities:

• Ensure that all implemented systems are done so safely.
• Responsible for execution and support of electrical equipment and systems (motors, substations, high/medium/low voltage switchgear, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, battery and UPS systems, DCS & PLC controls, large motors up to 40,000 HP, motor starting, and reduced voltage starting). The systems are implemented on Industrial Gas plants (ASU, CO2, specialty gas systems, electronics equipment delivery)
• The engineer is expected to communicate and support project engineers & managers / owner's engineers and suppliers on a global basis in the specifics of control systems project execution. This includes:
  • Ability to design electrical equipment and electrical power distribution systems (single line development and detailed elementary drawings).
  • Provide detailed drawing review and feedback to suppliers and equipment OEM's.
  • Critical supplier design audits of electricall systems to develop a full understanding of risks associated with system designs.
  • Ability to follow project from specification process, through design and manufacture, construction and installation, commissioning, and resolution of field issues.
  • Develop, plan, and implement QA/QC plans related to testing of electrical systems.
  • Ability to bring knowledge and experience from plant operating environment to improve best practices.
• Support Messer Group with significant operational issues of equipment and provide expert assistance in plant commissioning and troubleshooting.
• Support Operations and Project Teams on emergent issues and catastrophic failures. Sufficient experience is necessary to work independently without support of OEM's.
• Support and execute projects in multiple geographies as the business requires.
• Oversee the numerous contract control system engineering resources that Messer requires to support our projects.
• As a working manager, lead the Project Engineering and Execution Electrical Engineering team (including outsource and contract resources) to develop winning proposals and deliver projects Safely, to Specification, on Schedule and on Budget. This includes hiring and developing the team, developing tools that are aligned both with Operations and Messer globally.
• The team will develop, maintain, and publish the relevant engineering standards for capital projects.

Qualifications:

• Passion for safety
• Minimum 15 years relevant experience in specification, design, engineering, and implementation of electrical systems for large motors and chemical process plant operation.
• Expertise with large motor starting.
• Demonstrated experience in electrical short circuit analysis, relay protection settings and coordination, power quality analysis, high voltage motor starting schemes and analysis.
• Experience with PLC and DCS control system for motor operation and protection.
• Engineering/Troubleshooting/Design/Commissioning
• Minimum 5 years' experience process plant design / EPC experience
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Power Engineering is required.
• Broad knowledge of implementation of all elements of electrical engineering as it relates to machinery operation and design.
• Experience with Industrial Gases or petrochemical projects is a plus.
• Excellent reasoning skills with the ability to analyze and interpret technical information.
• Must be willing to travel extensively (40-50% of time) or as business requires.
