What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Associate, Protein Engineering position at Metagenomi?
We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Research Associate to join the Protein Engineering team. The incumbent will advance protein engineering projects to expand our proprietary genome editing technologies toolbox. A successful candidate will work with multidisciplinary mentors to understand our gene editing systems and to design/execute protein engineering pipelines to improve nuclease activity, target specificity, as well as PAM compatibility.

About the Role:
- Design constructs and primers for molecular cloning
- Use various cloning techniques (Gibson assembly, restriction enzyme digestion and ligation, etc.) to construct plasmids required for protein engineering
- Plasmid miniprep and PCR
- Prepare unbiased random mutagenesis library for directed evolution
- Perform E. coli transformations and screening assays
- Design and implement high throughput screening assays and selection methods for engineered protein variants
- Document experiments and present data at regularly scheduled lab meetings
- Collaborate closely with other teams
About you:
- BA/BS/MS degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.
- 1 years of wet lab experience
- Experience in cloning techniques including PCR, plasmid prep, restriction enzyme digestion and ligation, and Gibson assembly
- Excellent time management and organizational skills to tackle tight deadlines and multiple projects
- Familiarity with Geneious or other nucleic acid visualization software
- Able to quickly learn and adapt to new projects
- Highly collaborative, team-oriented, and considerate of the needs of others
- Thrives in a fast-moving, results-oriented startup environment with urgent deadlines
- Independent and self-sufficient, but knows when to ask questions or seek support
- Self-motivated, passionate about your work, and eager to continuously learn more
- Experience and knowledge in protein engineering strategies, structure-guided protein design, and high-throughput screening
Preferred additional qualifications:
- 1 years of research experience in industry
- Experience handling human cell lines
- Experience in CRISPR/CAS gene-editing related research
- Experience with PyMOL and 3D structure analysis
