Role Value Proposition:

Our Regional & Small Business Solutions team is responsible for strategy, sales, underwriting, account management and overall profitability. The Underwriting Consultant will provide group underwriting services for new business and renewals of dental, disability, life, and voluntary products for customers generally having 2-5,000 eligible employees.

The Underwriting Consultant is responsible to evaluate risk characteristics inherent in group insurance plans for prospects (new business) as well as renewals (existing business). This person will conduct a detailed analysis to establish profitable and competitive rates and plan characteristics given the unique circumstances and needs of each group customer.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes risk by running manual rate calculations and/or preparing highly complex experience-rated quotes; works with Sales team and other partners to ensure the final proposal will meet the needs of the group customer.
  • Underwrites new business quotes of highly complex requirements by analyzing plan design, demographics, and experience information to decide whether to accept risk and establish profitable and competitive premium levels. Consistently works independently and makes decisions on quotes of a highly complex nature. Engages internal partners on aspects that require investigation.
  • Underwrites renewals by reviewing current plan's premium history, claims history, and company financial condition to determine appropriate renewal action.
  • Prices and offers plan changes, produces experience analysis, and responds to inquiries from the Sales team, broker, customer, and other partners.
  • Works proactively and collaboratively with internal and external partners to make sound decisions that will continue to build MetLife’s book of group insurance business. Proactively provides market-differentiating solutions to increase likelihood of success on a given quote.


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

Required:

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, listening).
  • Excellent analytical skills and problem solving capabilities. Ability to utilize market and process knowledge in a manner that increases the likelihood of success or differentiates MetLife versus that of the competition, particularly on complex quotes requiring a thorough analysis.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines and consistently produce a high volume of work on complex quotes.
  • Ability to adapt to change and learn new products as needed to assist with team workload.
  • Strong customer service skills. Consistently demonstrates outstanding partnership with internal partners. Ability to communicate directly with customers and/or third parties in order to arrive at solutions.
  • High level of organizational skill and the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Team player: works well with other underwriters and business partners.
  • Strong Working knowledge of Microsoft products such as Excel and Word. Ability to develop spreadsheets using complex formulas functionality to maximize efficiency.
  • Expertise in participating as a member of project teams to continually improve underwriting operations. Prepare and deliver training materials. Ability to serve as a mentor for less-experienced underwriters, review work and provide job coaching.
  • Ability to grasp market and industry trends and proactively incorporate those aspects into the decision-making process.

Preferred:

  • Bachelors degree
  • 5 years of group underwriting experience
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting policies and procedures, underwriting guidelines and philosophies.
  • College degree in Math, Business, Finance, or the Financial Services industry.
  • Advanced degree beyond bachelors is a plus.
